A Kosher Camera To Cover Up Women

Remember when a Hasidic newspaper removed Hillary Clinton‘s image from the iconic White House photo of the Osama-bin-Laden-mission situation room?

While that newspaper was based out of Brooklyn, it seems like that practice happens a lot in Jerusalem where ultra-orthodox Jews have quite a bit of power:

This fact does not refer to scantily clad models, who were purged from signs and posters in the city several years ago as a result of campaigns waged by the ultra-Orthodox — struggles that sometimes included the burning and destruction of billboards and bus stops. The purging of women from publicly displayed pictures in Jerusalem applies to images of females in regular dress and daily situations. Pictures of women in family settings and advertisements of women using face cream or being connected to food or fashion products are hard to come by in this city.

In response to the madness, a wonderful parody website has been created marketing the Kosher Camera:

The camera has some interesting features, too:

I’m sure some Muslim extremists would love to get their hands on that equipment.

Ultra-Orthodox Judaism scares the living crap outta me.

Ultra-orthodox anything scares the living crap outta me.

Well, it was a faked publicity pic anyway, so who cares if it was photoshopped?  All they did was remove someone from a photo which was touted as showing an event that never happened (i.e. that Obama staffers were watching a live feed of the hit).  Truly, how wrong is it to further fake a faked photo?

    • BenFromCA

Interesting assertion.  But I don’t see any references, citations or other objective evidence.  And in the external references I’m reading, it makes no such claim about this being a “live feed.”  In fact, the link at the top of the page will take you to an article with the following caption:

FGBA notes that the original picture was posted by the White House with the following caption and disclaimer (emphasis added):
President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, along with members of the national security team, receive an update on the mission against Osama bin Laden in the Situation Room of the White House, May 1, 2011.Nothing there about a “live feed.”Do much fact-checking in this life, Jinx?

    • OverlappingMagisteria

Even if it was a faked publicity photo, we should care that women were removed. If women are unfit for even fake photos, what does that say about the culture?

  • T-Rex

Backwards ass idiots always trying to drag humanity back in to the Dark Ages.

  • Pigelot

So does this mean that in commercials, men are the ones doing laundry and cleaning toilets? Somehow I doubt it.

  • Falconer33

Did you notice the other women towards the back was removed also. At least they weren’t picking on Hillary ;)

  • Kevin_Of_Bangor

What if the dog is a bitch?

    • OverlappingMagisteria

Check out the website. It can filter out female dogs and female fetuses from ultrasounds too.

      • Kevin_Of_Bangor

I didn’t believe you so I checked out the web site and low and behold you can brown bag your female fetus and your bitch.

Brown bagging your female fetus sounds pretty awful though.

Sounds like a great school lunch to me.

Hmm, that could actually be made. Wonder what the success rates are on current tech to identify gender from face? I expect it would pixelate Justin Bieber.

  • Jayh6

I saw a cartoon a while ago (unfortunately no link) where a burqa clad woman is walking past a bikini clad woman wearing sunglasses.

The bikini clad woman is thinking ‘everything covered but her eyes, such a male dominated society.’

I just gotta say, that brown bag makes that woman look Hooooooot!

  • Iosue

Ultra-Orthodox Jewish men must be a sex-crazed bunch– to go to such lengths as to virtually erase the sight of women is… perverse.

In Saudi Arabia it’s the same. Walk around a mall with hundreds of clothing stores, and  none of the images have female faces. Either cut off or blurred out. So fucking creepy.

What the heck did these newspapers do when Golda Meir was elected Israel’s Prime Minister in 1969? Did they make her the Invisible Prime Minister? How about Indira Gandhi while she was Prime Minister of India for a total of 15 years between 1966 and 1980? Did they just never run a photo at all?  Then there was Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1979 to 1990. Lots of luck ignoring her. How did they handle photos of the “Iron Lady”?

“I’m sure some Muslim extremists would love to get their hands on that equipment.

Why pick on Muslims? The article was about ultra-orthodox Jews.
    Prejudiced?

As an Israeli, it’s becoming even more absurd than you can imagine.
Lately, even animated versions of small children are being erased, as shown in this (formal) ad for a clinic in Jerusalem.

      Small female children, that is.
