We Should’ve Invited Miley Cyrus to the Reason Rally…

Remember when singer Miley Cyrus tweeted a quotation from Lawrence Krauss (“… forget Jesus. The stars died so that you could be here today”) and faced the wrath of many of her Christian fans?

Today, she retweeted a Kelly Osbourne quotation about religion…:

“Religion. It`s given people hope in a world torn apart by religion. ” -Charlie Chaplin

Osbourne wrongly attributes that line to Charlie Chaplin — it’s actually Jon Stewart who said that — but that’s besides the point.

Yes, people retweet things because a friend says it or the line is just funny. But that’s not a pro-religion quotation by any means. It’s another indication that Miley may not be as “Christian” as one would imagine. And having another pro-science/reality celebrity wouldn’t be such a bad thing…

(For the record, I *swear* I’m not stalking her Twitter feed just waiting for her to say something anti-religious or pro-science. But I find it fascinating how much people in the media care about this sort of thing — you know someone is going to bring it up — so might as well mention it here.)

I wonder how Billy Ray Cyrus will react

If Miley’s an atheist I may have to rethink my stance on religion, lol!

I’ll admit it.  I would dance my ass off if she came and sang Party In The USA.  Guilty pleasure.

    • Andrew Morgan

Haha, I came here to say exactly that.

The lyrics are absolutely moronic but the chorus is catchy as hell and the bassline’s incredible.

Her responses to the the last shirt-storm she created with the Krauss quote made it quite clear that she’s a believer in faith and God. Wouldn’t be surprised to find out she’s one of those people who says she’s not “religious”, but follows Jesus because being a true Christian doesn’t involve religion. Though I wouldn’t be surprised to find her on our side in secularizing American government.

    Here are some choice tweets.

“Religion & Science are inter-twined with each other and cannot be separated. They are the 2 wings with which humanity must fly”

It makes me sad to think the world is this way. Like Einstein says “Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind.”

Science can explain what the eyes see. Faith can explain what only the heart sees.

The girl’s only 19. Give her time.

Oh for sure. She seems to have a kind head on her shoulders too so I don’t think we have much to worry about.

    • OverlappingMagisteria

Thanks. I know we are all incredibly eager to claim Miley as an atheist (for some reason) but we gotta stay grounded in reality. Given all the evidence, she seems to fit under the “believe in God, not religion” camp. Who knows if she’ll go one way or another in the future.

What’s the deal with the twitter thing.  I don’t use it that often, so I’m not automatically logged in – and it tells me that the Lawrence Krauss quote might upset me or cause offense.

    Seriously?

    • http://twitter.com/nicoleintrovert Nicole Introvert

Because so many people marked it as offensive it automatically goes into a hiding state, and gives that warning.   It’s not because Twitter deemed it so.

    • Deon Garrett

Presumably enough people “flagged” it. I don’t think it’s any sort of editorial endorsement from Twitter.

Um, I think Abraham Lincoln said that, actually…

If we’re going for pop princesses, can we get Lucy Hale to sing Bless Myself?

    “There’s a little secret
I would like to tell you
    There’s a book of lies
I know they’ll try to sell you
And they’ll try, and they’ll try
To convince you to buy you need ‘em
So the next time you’re down
    Look inside not around.”
“I have searched the world to find
    There’s nothing better
Than when me, myself and I
    Can come together
And I know for a fact
    There’s a spirit I lack or defend”
    “You can bless yourself
There’s no need for someone else
    There’s no one to blame
There’s no one to save you but yourself”
Astoundingly, the song was part of a Cinderella movie on ABC Family.

I doubt she’d tell his achy breaky heart.  I just don’t think it’d understand.
