Fundamentalist Mormon Sect Kills a Kitten to Send Message to Former Member (Graphic Picture In Post)

***Update***: For some reason, the bulk of this article got cut off earlier today. Here it is in its entirety.

So this is the punishment for pissing off Warren Jeffs‘ polygamy-friendly Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints:

The kitten was discovered at the home of Isaac Wyler, a former church member, who has spoken out against the church and its controversial former leader Warren Jeffs…

Andrew Chatwin, who, like Wyler, is a former member of the FDLS, found the cat inside one of a metal tube used to construct cement posts, according to RightThisMinute.com.

In order to rescue the cat, Chatwin had to cut the post and dig out the footing. He took the feline to an animal sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, where it died a few days later.

Chatwin, who left the FLDS 13 years ago, believes the cruel act was done by members of his former church. He claims both the threats and the animal killings have been going on for years.

This is messed up. And the authorities won’t do anything about it. When Chatwin called them up, the officer on duty (a member of the FLDS) just laughed.

But it’s not very surprising. This is the mindset of these fundamentalists. If they can show their power in any way — prove that they’re dominant — they will use that opportunity. It doesn’t matter if it’s women, children, or animals. Hell, this this isn’t just animal cruelty, it’s a form of terrorism — killing one creature to scare all the others.

Something else to think about: How many of these crimes don’t ever get reported because church members are too afraid of the repercussions?

Even though he’s not a fundamentalist, it makes me rethink how Romney drove a long distance with his dog strapped to the roof of his car…

Anyway, the Cleveland Skeptics are trying to raise $1,000 for homeless and neglected animals in response to this. You can pitch in here!

I suggest we bury the sheriff and the assholes who did this in a hole with cement and then throw dirt at their heads to see if they like it. Also, someone please notify 4chan of this, i’m sure we’re going to have names in less than 24 hours.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=773692362 Jansen Waddell

      Positive use of 4chan?

      Kudos to you, sir.

  • Hibernia86

I have the link to the huffington post article and the first sentence of this blog post. Is there supposed to be more or is it so sick that you decided that it could speak for itself?

    • RebeccaSparks

Seeing that there’s a graphic warning with no graphics, I expect that there was a technical glitch–but the article & video in Huffpo is quite enough to make your skin crawl.

  • Alan Christensen

Maybe you were understating for comic effect, but the FLDS is not just “polygamy-friendly.” Polygamy is required. It’s their raison d’etre.

  • Tainda

I shouldn’t have watched that video!  I cried at my desk for a half hour.

Those inbred mofos need to pay for this!

  • averydashwood

The article includes a correction stating that Jeffs’ name was misspelled, but his name is misspelled in the correction as well!

I think instead someone should inform OSHA. Poor worksite conditions that are unsafe for cats.

      • http://twitter.com/RinnosukeETQW Jeff Simons

You’ve been rather abusive to other people commenting, any reason for that? because I would say your theory above is far from enough reason for it.

        • brianmacker

Really. So it is abusive to point out that it is very likely the cat got trapped because of the work site conditions? Was it my comment where I pointed out how someone could deserve compassion in this if the accidentally left a ladder out, or boards to prop up the poles? OSHA gets called in to investigate things so that such accidents can be avoided in the future. It is a method of sharing knowledge about ways to prevent such accidents. They may or may not have rules to cover such situations. The open pipes are clearly a hazard to small animals, and not just cats. A search on cats and pipes will bear out that when you mix the two at work sites their are hazards involed, and not because workmen keep cats at work sites, but because owners are not responsible in keeping their cats safe.

Now I can understand how this fellow might interpret an accident as being done purposely given his situation. That doesn’t mean I have to lose my objectivity. He provided zero information that would distinguish this from an accident.

You seem to see abuse in my comments and not in comments calling for burying people in concrete, and destroying entire towns full of innocent children and cats with meteors. What’s that about? In fact I think now I will respond to the meteor comment because I was avoiding that because of the level of crazy in it. I just didn’t think the person would respond rationally to a rational reply. Think I’ll respond in a way that plays off their compassion for cats because obviously they have none for humans. Something like, “What about all the innocent cats” or “Hopefully you’ll evacuate the cara first even if you leave all the children.”. I’m imagining one of the cats looking over it’s shoulder and turning into a pilar of salt, because this is normally the kind of abusive vengeance one sees in the bible.

        • brianmacker

My most mocking comment was targeted at the vile concept in the article of tying Romney to this. It was not abusive of a commenter. You don’t think that was stretch that required some mocking? Obama eats dog (according to his autobiography) so maybe he was chasing the cat for dinner and it had to flee up the ladder and into the pipe. That sounds about as credible.

There is nothing in Mormon doctrine that requires or even suggests cats should be shoved down pipes into wet concrete so just because Romney is Mormon does not cause any responsibility to fall on him for this. I’d agree if their was evidence the Book Of Mormon advocated cat piping the way the Quran advocates capturing non-muslim women as sex slaves, but I don’t have that. Putting your dog in a covered car top carrier certainly doesn’t rise to the same level of abuse as burying a cat in concrete or what they do to dogs before they eat them.

If you are going to repeat stories about Romney for political points in this then it is only fair to drag in Obama, don’t you think.

  • Ginger P

The Cleveland Skeptics are trying to channel people’s rage in order to make some good out of this by attempting to raise $1,000 for Best Friends, the animal sanctuary who took in the kitten who we call, “Stasy” for apostasy: http://www.clevelandskeptics.org/2012/07/why-would-someone-trap-kitten-in-cement.html  We’ve already raised $420 and figure that the medical care given to this kitten likely was worth $1,000 and having people administer any pain relief priceless. (Cement causes chemical burn in addition to any other suffering.) In addition, Best Friends takes in homeless animals, perhaps like the ones these maniacs like to kill. (Isaac has been finding dead cats for years since he left 13 years ago.)

Please pass along! Thank you, Ginger.

    • brianmacker

Why do people call themselves skeptics when they don’t have a skeptical bone in their body. Where’s the skepticism towards this totally unfounded claim that this was a “warning message”? Zero evidence was presented to implicate anyone. I’ m really disappointed with the level of sleuthing here.

      • http://twitter.com/RinnosukeETQW Jeff Simons

Your argument above doesn’t hold any weight, some cats will calmly take being put in water, in fact most of the cats I’ve had have. However there’s a history of this guy getting threats from the FLDS, and they’ve been shown in past cases to do similar to this, it’s simply more plausible for them to have done this, hence why there should be an investigation.

        • brianmacker

So somebody just happened to have a cat they knew would keep quite, and the exact time the concrete would be wet, and managed to get back there and lift a cat without the ladder (because the owner of the house put it away properly and not left it where a cat might climb it. My argument didn’t depend on one thing but many. The claim made was that someone purposely did this (for example mixing up some fresh cement, or being there at the right time) so there is some physical evidence one would expect. No evidence, zero, was provided that some did this. I’d have to see evidence in the other cases and would natually consider them separate incidents. One would expect those poles to be propped up somehow as the concrete dried and I do not see evidence of that in the video. As he chips the concrete I see no large stones set to prop ot up. He has boards laying there so that seems likely as an explanation as to how he was keeping them vertical.

          • brianmacker

Note, I’m six foot one inch and I can just barely touch an eight foot high ceiling with the tip of my middle finger if I’m on my tippy toes. Not likely anyone did this without a ladder. So did they bring their own or was one left at the work site? If the ladder was left out then why not where it was last used next to a pole? The state if the cement was wet when the cat fell in as one would expect of the last pole that the ladder was used with.

  • ReadsInTrees

I’m on a computer that won’t play videos…and I think it’s a good thing. The article itself was enough to get me enraged. I work as an animal control officer, so investigating animal cruelty is part of my job. If this guy’s local police won’t help, he should contact his state’s animal welfare program or the Humane Society of the United States to see if some higher ups will get involved.

They need to be arrested and jailed NOW!!

  • Istj04

Has anyone informed the militants at PETA? I am sure they have a “vengeance posse” headed to do justice for the kitten, right now! (Not normally a “PETA” supporter, but when it comes to religious wack-jobs killing innocent kittens, I will gladly endorse whatever VIOLENT methods they choose to enact against the religionist wack-jobs!).

this is so sick i can’t even muster a comment. hurting kittens? really? sick.

  • Bholly72

The sickos who did this should be in jail asap. They are inhuman scum.

  • Ronlawhouston

This is actually a group that should be on everyone’s radar.  The abuses they perpetuate are widespread.  There is talk that they may pull something like the Branch Davidians since Warren Jeffs is in a Texas prison for the rest of his natural life and has no reason not to pursue some nutty end time suicide edict.  I could go on and on about this group, but I’ll spare folks the gory details.  If you’re interested check out http://texasflds.wordpress.com/ .

    • William Perrin

I second this.  What happened to the cat is unconscionable, to be sure, but this “church” is responsible for a lot worse.

  • Corrado Conti

I am not going to watch the video. I know from experience that ti takes me a long time, if ever, to get certain images out of my mind.

Plus, I cannot suffer cruelty to animals. Domesticated animal’s first instinct is to trust us humans. For a kitten the first humans thy come into contact become family. I know animals don’t think the same we do, but no one can deny their innocence and trust. Knowing there are people that betray that trust and go on to kill the kitten makes me sick inside.

While I won’t watch the video, I would gladly watch one with the perpetrators in it. Any chance of that?
Let’s trow the sheriff in the pipe too. Scum.

    • RebeccaSparks

I don’t think I could watch a video with a human being submerged in concrete, even if they are a jerk or worse.  I would watch the perpetrators being on trail and sentenced though.

  • Atheistpowerlifter

Jesus fucking christ you guys…can anyone who can do this actually deserve any compassion? In any way, shape or form?  What the fuck can the demented person who did this contribute to the earth? They are using oxygen that normal beings/mammals/insects can use in a much better way.

Great people get cancer, and ALs and terrible disesases every day…yet these people or person lives.

I lost all hope for humanity reading this post and watching the video. Humans really are a parasitic virus.

    • Glasofruix

And that’s probably the reason we’ll be exterminated by our alien overlords.

    • brianmacker

Looks to me that the guy in the video accidentally did it. Didn’t cover the pipe aver setting it in the concrete. That’s how the person doing this can deserve compassion.

  • http://twitter.com/silo_mowbray Silo Mowbray

MOTHER. FUCKER. Whomever did this “needs killin’” as they say in the Ozarks. :-(

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001627228091 Alexander Ryan

Jail is too good for the fuckers that did this. You almost want to hope that there is some place where these assholes can be tortured and suffer until the end of time.

  • http://itsmyworldcanthasnotyours.blogspot.com/ wmdkitty

    That poor keow! *cries*

  • Tyrrlin Flamestrike

I made the mistake of watching the video… now I cannot stop crying over that poor kitten’s suffering.  Animal abuse is inexcusable.  How can people be so cruel to an innocent, loving, trusting creature like that?

….excuse me while I go hug my cat.  I can’t stop crying.

    • http://itsmyworldcanthasnotyours.blogspot.com/ wmdkitty

Good idea. I’mma go find my Gracie-baby…

  • Sue Blue

What can you expect from people who rounded up all the dogs in town and shot them, whose toddlers get “accidentally” run over by cars on a regular basis, whose dead infants are thrown out with the trash, who force girls as young as thirteen into arranged marriages where they’ll be regularly raped by elderly pedophiles who may or may not be their own fathers; who kick teenaged boys out on their own to avoid them competing with the older polygamists for young girls; and who perpetrate welfare fraud on an industrial scale to support their numerous wives and children?
This made me literally sick.  I’m not usually vengeful, but I have to say I personally would cheer  and break out the champagne if a meteorite wiped out that town and all the surrounding FLDS enclaves.  Except for the young children who were born into this and don’t have a choice, I have zero tolerance for these pieces of human shit.

    • brianmacker

What about all the cats? Would you warn them to leave and not look back over their shoulders so they don’t turn to salt?

Note that most of those you would cheer to their doom besides the children were born into this, and even the adult males face enormous hurdles in escaping. They lose not only their livings, and homes but their families (not just their wives and children but their parents).

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_FYVERNVVEL7KWT6UKIKYNCEMLM Douglas

..and we know the FLDS did this how?

    • brianmacker

Everyone knows that Brigham Young was a magician that invented a device by which you can get cement and a cat down a eight foot high four inch diameter pole in a stealthy manner and leaving no residue on the inside of a pipe. Had to be someone who has access to this highly guarded secret. A Mormon in the highest of positions with access to such secrets. Like Romney perhaps.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_FYVERNVVEL7KWT6UKIKYNCEMLM Douglas

The depth and degree of deception in anti-Mormon propaganda can be seen in Arthur Conan Doyle’s short story “A Study in Scarlett”. It portrayed Mormon society as oppressive to women; one in which women were forced into polygamous marriages against their will. At the very time “A Study in Scarlett”, was written, Utah had the most liberal divorce laws in the United States and possibly the world.  Since 1852, any woman who insisted on a divorce got one. Lawyers from New York and other states often obtained easy Utah divorces by claiming their clients planned to move to Utah.

By comparison, life for women in England during Arthur Conan Doyle’s life was far less liberating. The 1857 Matrimonial Causes Act allowed divorce through the law courts, instead of the slow and expensive business of a Private Act of Parliament. Under the terms of the act, the husband had only to prove his wife’s adultery, but the wife had to prove her husband had committed not just adultery but also incest, bigamy, cruelty or desertion. Once divorced, the children became the man’s property and the mother could be prevented from seeing her children.

Got any sources to back this up? All I see of this claim is a post you made on the CARM website (also with no sources).

      • brianmacker

If you trust Wiki: “Late 19th century Utah also had the most liberal divorce laws in the United States and possibly the world at the time. The laws were advantageous to women. Any woman who insisted on a divorce got one. One of Brigham Young’s wives divorced him and launched a lucrative career as a public speaker. The divorce rate in late 19th century Utah came close to current rates at about 30 percent. This divorce rate was inflated by people from other states seeking an easy divorce in Utah.[full citation needed][16]”

        16. ^ Sarah Barringer Gordon, The Mormon Question: Polygamy and Constitutional Conflict in Nineteenth Century America 3 (2002) – supra note 203, at 842

Try this Utah government link also: http://archives.utah.gov/research/inventories/4700.html

“Prior to 1878, Utah Territory had one of the most liberal divorce laws in the United States and did not require residency in order to obtain a divorce within the territory. A simple statement that the married couple could not live in peace and union together was sufficient grounds for the granting of a divorce decree. As such, once the establishment of the railroad system provided regular access to the territory in 1869, the Probate Court handled many divorces for persons who could not meet the stricter laws regarding the granting of divorces in their home states. In 1878, the territorial Legislature changed the law to require residency, thereby decreasing significantly the number of divorces handled by the Probate Court.”

This is horrendous and makes me ashamed to be an Arizonan.  Does anyone have the contact info for the marshal’s office?  I wouldn’t mind making some angry phone calls…

    • brianmacker

Are you going to complain about this guy leaving poles open at the top that cats can fall into? I wonder if he digs wells and leaves the caps off because I don’t see a single cap on any of these pipes. What if a bird or cat falls in?

  • brianmacker

The cement looked like the cat sank into the cement that extruded up into the pipe as it was set. Notice that there is zero concrete sticking to the inside of the cut off pipe as he filmed down into it while it was in the ground. It’s possible that whoever set the posts (likely the guy shooting the video) did not take the precaution of covering the top of the pipe after setting it in the wet cement. It is very likely that he had some kind of supports set up, like 2×4 struts to hold the pole in place while the concrete set, or maybe he left that ladder out. It is possible to set the pipe without such supports if you fill the hole with large rocks before or as you pour the cement, but I see no evidence of that. Looks like poor work site safety as much as anything else.

Since he mentioned in the video that he expected to be done that day I assume that the supposed perpetrators didn’t dig the hole, mix the cement and set the pipe then drop the cat in while it was still wet. Since there is no cement sticking to the inside of the pipe no one could have mixed new cement and dropped it down inside, before dropping the cat in. What are the odds that the alleged perpetuators Showed up exactly as the cement that came up through the bottom was wet, the lighting was poor enough to hide their activities but bright enough to allow them to find all the tools, go to the house spigot to turn on the water, mix the cement, catch a cat, and do that without getting concrete all over the place? Where did the find the suitable funnel and bucket to lift all that cement in get it down the top of the pipe without spilling it down the inside and outside of the pipe? The outside of the pipe is amazingly clean also. Why go to all that trouble when you can kill a cat (they are more quite that way at night) and stuff it in a mailbox.

Plus haven’t any of you tried to get your cat in the sink for a bath, or in a crate? They have claws. Imagine being balanced on a pole eight feet up on a ladder trying to shove a loose cat (no ropes around it) into a four inch pipe. Imagine the howling cat, the scratching and biting. How come no one in those very close houses noticed all this. It’s probably close to his house also unless he decided to build up horse stalls next to his neighbors while keeping the stench far from his abode.

This does not add up as a “warning message”. It does as a cat accidentally falling in a uncovered pole. I once had the unpleasant task of emptying out a water filled metal garbage can of my elderly widowed neighbor and finding a decomposing cat inside. She had left the cover on top of the warped can in a way that it could flip around. I think the cat jumped on top, the cover flipped dumping it into the water to drown.

If this cat jumped on the top of the pipe from something, or bear hugged it’s way up to avoid some dog, then once it fell in it’s pleading would be muffed. Plus it wold be dropping eight feet into concrete that had little stone because it bled up into the pipe. that would give it a good start in being submerged and having less lung power.

Let’s not participate in yet another witch hunt here.
