Kirk Cameron Talks About His Atheist Past, ‘Liberal Press’

For several months, former Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron has been under fire from LGBT activists for an interview with Piers Morgan in which Cameron said homosexuality was “unnatural,” “detrimental,” and “destructive.” Cameron is a born-again Christian who speaks frequently about how his faith affects his life.

As recently as July, Cameron made headlines again for refusing to meet with LGBT youth while he was headlining a religious anti-marriage-equality event in New Jersey.

In an interview with Naples News this week, he said in spite of all the bad press he’s received, he’s apparently content to have stuck by his values.

“I’m OK with the way things worked out,” said Cameron. “That’s not to say there’s not a better way of saying something. I think Todd Akin would agree with that.”

After the awkward Todd Akin reference, Cameron continued by blaming the media for the backlash against his comments:

Cameron says it was simply a case of the “liberal press” looking for things to twist and take out of context.

“If Piers Morgan were truly concerned about the homosexual community, concerned with people being hurt, he could have eliminated that section, like he did many other parts of our conversation,” Cameron said.

Cameron also spoke briefly about his time as an atheist during his teen years:

Tongue firmly planted in cheek, Cameron says of his time as an atheist that he’s as religious now as he was then, “only instead of serving me, I serve God.”

Cameron’s conversion came around age 18. He says that when he examined what the Bible said, he humbled himself, and perhaps, was literally saved.

The best part of this whole debacle? CCOKC, or Child Celebrities Opposing Kirk Cameron, the Funny or Die video featuring other child stars who denounced Cameron’s comments and announced their support for LGBT equality. (Yes, it’s pronounced “cock,” and no, it’s NSFW.)

I think saying that Cameron “made headlines” is really overstating things. Most people have never heard of him. The only place I ever see headlines featuring his name is in this forum.

    He’s a non-entity.

    • Punkylove04

yahoo news covered the story in their highlighted news section when it occured

That twit makes it onto major popular news pages on a regular basis. Well, you know, “News”.

It’s funny, I think anyone who doesn’t believe in god should have the courage to call themselves an atheist, but at the same time I get extremely annoyed by converted former “dictionary” atheists who talk about how they used to be atheists. Yes, Kirk, I believe that you didn’t believe in god as a teenager and now you do. I even believe that ardent and thoughtful atheists occasionally convert to religion of one form or another. But I don’t think you get to pretend to know what the atheists of the world are thinking when you probably never so much as read a word by Bertrand Russell, or Richard Dawkins (he may have read a few passages of Dawkins out of context since converting so he could make up stupid arguments that fail to rebut him), Spinoza, Hitchens, or ever really given any thought at all as to *why* there might or might not be a god.

Plus, he may not even have been a “dictionary” atheist.

A dictionary atheist is someone who fits the broadest definition of atheist: simply someone who does not have a belief in any god or gods.

But the Fundamentalist and Evangelical Christian definition of atheist seems to be a bit different: someone who isn’t an ardent believer in the right kind of Christianity, also an agent of Satan. So if you get converted to Ray Comfort’s brand of Christianity, and before that you were a regular old Lutheran, or Anglican, or whatever and you really didn’t go to church anymore because you’re a teenager with more interesting things to do and you were busy sinning, well then you were clearly an atheist……

“If Piers Morgan were truly concerned about the homosexual community,
concerned with people being hurt, he could have eliminated that section,
like he did many other parts of our conversation,” Cameron said.

“If that nerd was truly concerned about me stuffing his friends in lockers, he never would have told the teacher!”

    • Bryan

       Ugh, block quote fail…

    • Glasofruix

I’m positively certain that our friend Kirk had spent some quality time inside the cozy interior of a locker when he was in school.

      • Coyotenose

IIRC, he had a typical popular 80′s teen television icon education: basically nothing at all and got his undone assignments signed off on for the sake of convenience so he could get back to autographing stacks of photos of himself.

I think he confuses “non-practicing” christian with Atheism – I’ve known other people who have done the same thing . . .

    • The Captain

Yep! I’ve run into too any born again christians that do this to count.

For some reason born agains have this “who rose from lower depths” contest with each other. It’s as if who ever was worse before their conversion, is somehow more pious now just by definition. So they constantly end up making up shit about how “bad” they used to be to make themselves look better to each other.

      • grindstone

Truer words were rarely spoken (typed).  I’m simply amazed by all the former drug dealers and pimps now sit in today’s pews, and that there seems to be some eternal fount of drugs and hookers.  If you could fact check via time machine, it would probably translate to:  “took a hit and coughed myself stupid, once”, and “dated a non-virgin one time”.

        • Coyotenose

Yep, I’ve seen the exact same thing. They take “used to loiter in the Wal-Mart parking lot as a teen with other teens” and turn it into “used to hang out with whores, violent criminals and drug dealers.”

  • Marc

Still waiting to hear from Alan Thicke on this…

“Tongue firmly planted in cheek, Cameron says of his time as an atheist that he’s as religious now as he was then, ‘only instead of serving me, I serve God.’”

Sure, because atheists only want to serve themselves *rolls eyes*. They couldn’t ever be trying to serve other people, or society at large, could they?

“He says that when he examined what the Bible said, he humbled himself, and perhaps, was literally saved.”

Oh, that’s a nice one, too– the implication that Christians are humble, whereas atheists are prideful and arrogant. Oddly enough, I see plenty of news items about Christians who come across as not humble, but insufferably arrogant. For that matter, the notion that they’re saved while the rest of us are going to burn in eternal hellfire comes across as just a wee bit arrogant, from my point of view.

  • Octoberfurst

I get very irritated when right-wingers like Cameron try to blame “the liberal media” for their woes.  They claim the big bad liberals take things out of context just to make them look bad. Uhh no Kirk, they merely quote what you say. It is not their fault that you come across as a clueless, bigoted jackass because you ARE a clueless, bigoted jackass. So please stop whining about how “persecuted” you are. It’s simply not true.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RPPWVLMFKJ7QCHLEVQAR5GSL5M momma J

If you’re trying to tell me that  corporate media isn’t biased and doesn’t try to spin things then you MUST be pretty gullible. I’m not saying it’s the “Liberal Press”only that does this. The conservative press does it too. This is how the cable news outlets make their money. They cater to a certain demograph.

Both sides do it. CNN does it, MSNBC, CNBC and even though they claim to be “fair and balanced” Fox News does it too. THe owner of Fox News is a Liberal himself. Just spinning it the other way to make money. It just so happens that most media outlets are indeed Liberal. So that does make it easy to blame the Liberal Press.

It’s not unlike all of the negative campaign adds that come out at election time. The news outlets are just more subtle about it is all. Have you ever seen a negative campaign add that didn’t pull a quote out of context and try to create a false idea about a candidate.

Candidate A voted against raising taxes to support the building of a new animal shelter. Candidate A hates puppies! Seriously? Perhaps there was a rider on the bill that was trying to raise puppies that also tried to increase the wages by $10 per hour for all unionized ice cream truck drivers and the candidate thought that all ice cream truck drivers, though deserving of a raise, only should get a $3 per hour raise so he voted against the proposed bill. But Candidate A wants to kill puppies! Therefore vote for Candidate B. He loves puppies!

It’s the same thing that’s done with a lot of stories in the press. They try to go for either shock value or are trying to cover a news story and make it interesting to their viewers. They know their audience (Conservative or Liberal) and they cater to them.

      • Octoberfurst

And you Momma J don’t understand sarcasm.  I used quotes around “Liberal media” because that is the charge that conservatives make all the time about ALL the media except for their beloved Fox News and talk radio of course. They believe that the media as a whole is totally biased againt them because it’s made up of liberals which is not true. I actually totally agree with you assessment on the corporate media.

  • LesterBallard

He was an atheist the way S. E. Cupp is an atheist.

  • cipher

Tongue firmly planted in cheek, Cameron says of his time as an
atheist that he’s as religious now as he was then, “only instead of
    serving me, I serve God.”

Cameron’s conversion came around age 18.

In other words, he was a normal teenager (well, who happened to be on a TV show).

Can we please make it illegal for Cameron to keep saying he used to be an atheist? I doubt he ever gave it a thought.

    • Michael Appleman

It doesn’t really matter if he ever gave it any thought. If he says he was an atheist then he was an atheist. No True Scottsman, etc. etc.

What the case probably was, was that his reasons for being atheist were rather flimsy and superficial. So it was easy for him to drop it and take a completely different path.

It doesn’t matter if you are an atheist because of a deep meaningful introspection, because the voices in your head told you to be one, or because all the cool kids are doing it and you want to fit in.

      • cipher

Michael, my point was that he probably never gave the existence or non-existence of God much thought at all. He was a teenage boy on a TV show with scads of money. He was most likely too busy concentrating on getting laid.

Then, for whatever complex environmental and neurophysiological reasons (and as regular readers of my diatribes are aware, I strongly favor the latter), he decide he was “born again”. I’m sure that’s when he decided he had been an atheist. As The Captain said, above:

For some reason born agains have this “who rose from lower depths”
contest with each other. It’s as if who ever was worse before their
conversion, is somehow more pious now just by definition. So they
constantly end up making up shit about how “bad” they used to be to make
themselves look better to each other.

It’s a competition with them – who came the farthest to be the most pious. Plus, he feels it gives him credibility with atheists and secularists – “I used to be just like you.” A lot of them do it; he just happens to be more annoying than most because he’s one of the most egregiously stupid.

  • Glasofruix

How do you spin it out of context when he reaches for his pictures of a “crocoduck” and some sort of idiotic noise comes out of his mouth?

I can’t believe the nerve of the liberal press directly quoting things that Kirk Cameron actually said.  Nor the nerve of the lamestream media to imply that those words that Kirk said actually meant what he intended them to mean.  Isn’t there any fair and objective news sources left?  Who will think of the children?

  • newavocation

“only instead of serving me, I serve God”? This is so ass backward. He is serving God to get the pass to heaven. How is that not serving “me”?

    • ~SoACTing

Because he gets to spend eternity in heaven singing praises to the self serving almighty god??

      ~ SoACTing

    • Gus Snarp

Best line in that speech: “According to our forefathers, God IS the platform!”

Weird, Kirk. Our forefathers said “God IS the platform”? Odd that they don’t once mention him in the Constitution then.

  • Guest

The press is liberal?  I didn’t know that.  I just thought like Barry Lynn has explained, there’s really no such thing as liberal, there’s only Truth (TM).  The press is simply reporting Truth (TM).  They can’t help it that the Truth (TM) they report on is the singular indisputable Truth of the universe that demands conformity and obedience and is the only Truth against which all alternative claims should be measured.  It’s just their job to report it as it really is.  Really.  It’s not like all those generations ago when scholars and journalists and others manipulated information in order to advance agendas.  It’s now.  We’re far too hip and enlightened to fall for anything like that.

    • Coyotenose

Too bad for ignoramuses that Reality has such a huge liberal bias, ain’t it?

Oh, your anti-intellectualist hatred of educated people is showing. Might want to work on that.

    • cipher

You know, Fox News is on 24/7.

  • Guest

Oh, and I watched the little video of celebrities blasting Cameron for not conforming to their freethinking ways.  Humorous in a sort of ‘not hit puberty yet and so everything has to do with sex because nothing else is even remotely that important’ sort of way.

    • AxeGrrl

blasting Cameron for not conforming to their freethinking ways

Uh, what do you think Cameron is doing every single time he speaks out against same sex marriage and atheism?

could it be……blasting them for not comforming to his religious ways? :)

Fairness in speech:  a wonderful, wonderful thing!

      • Guest

That’s OK.  Religious people or traditionalists never strutted under the label of tolerant and diverse like so many peacocks.   They don’t have to be tolerant or celebrate diversity.  They never made such claims.  The left, on the other hand, fed on it.  It was, in the day, that clarion call of liberalism, the same liberalism which brought forth such things as gay rights in the first place. Oh, and free speech is a wonderful thing.  Which is why I’m not calling on either to be censored.

        • Glasofruix

the same liberalism which brought forth such things as gay rights in the first place

And this is bad? How come?

        • Antinomian

“That’s OK.  Religious people or traditionalists never strutted under the label of tolerant and diverse like so many peacocks.   They don’t have to be tolerant or celebrate diversity. ”

You’re pretty proud of that aren’t you?

    • Coyotenose

Yawn. Cameron is mocked because his claims and arguments are childish and ignorant. Try again, with less fail and without the blinders on please.

  • HitchsAprentice

As usual…  Kirk Cameroons arguments are Vacuous………

  • Marco

Cameron continues to be a Growing Pain.

liberals are stupid most liberals are agnostic or atheist which is the same thing to be a liberal is there religon. liberals do not want to be accountable for anything they say or do . if they are held to accountability they call you a racist. Liberals use Racism as a political weapon just like the military use machine guns both are a weapon.liberals think they are so brilliant just by virtue of being a liberal. most liberals are marxists , liberals dont really care about the poor, minorities, womens rights, racism these are just politcal tools to further the one thing they do care about .Socialist Government and Big Government. the bigger Government the better and the more Socialist the Better. Liberals believe all money belongs to the Government and liberals are very generous with other peoples money but are very stingy when it comes to there own money.
