What Atheism Podcasts Do You Listen To?

It’s been a long while since I’ve asked something like this but I was reminded that there are so many podcasts about atheism out there and most of us probably know of only a handful of them (if any at all).

So if you run a podcast or listen to one that we should all be checking out, please leave a link to it in the comments!

    Skeptics Guide to the Universe.

“The Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe is produced by SGU Productions, LLC – dedicated to promoting critical thinking, reason, and the public understanding of science through online and other media. The first episode of the SGU podcast went online on May 4th, 2005. It soon became a popular science/skeptical podcast, and remains one of the most popular science podcasts on iTunes.”

We listen to it every week.

    I listen to:
    The Good AtheistReasonable Doubts

I also produce a podcast with a Christian friend called “Faith and Skepticism” where we discuss/debate different topics. We have recently just finished the first 5 books of the Bible. We’re always looking for people to participate in some of our debates.

  • Schiebs

    Reasonable Doubts. :)

  • http://tch3.com C High

I listen to none that are specifically “atheist”.

I’ve tried to listen to a couple, but haven’t been interested.

  • njreese

“The Good Atheist” and “Reasonable Doubts”. For some reason they showed up on the same line.

We just started our podcast at Left Hemispheres in the past month. We’re “raw”, but have had good reactions so far.

  • ErickaMJohnson
  • NixManes

I do a weekly atheist podcast called Appreciate Your Mind.

  • http://anonatheist.wordpress.com/ Mike Hunt

Thanks for informing me about Penn’s Sunday School,  I remember hearing about it when it started and thinking it should be interesting but then forgot to subscribe.  I just downloaded all of the episodes and am copying them to my iPod now, I am looking forward to listening to them.

  • Nicksabot

    Cognitive Dissonance
A News every once and a while

We started doing a podcast on Left Hemispheres recently. We do a bi-weekly with the for of us, and I’ve started doing interviews. I’ve got one with Taylor Muse of Quiet Company, and more on the way.

  • http://twitter.com/mysilentfury MySilentFury.com

Well all the ones I listen to have been listed, but thanks for turning me on to several more.

  • allein

Freethought Radio, The Thinking Atheist, and Ask an Atheist.
Plus occasionaly one-offs I read about that sound interesting…I just listened to the episode of Post-Rapture Looting that Hemant was on recently and then downloaded the rest of the episodes (though I haven’t listened to any of them yet). Also the Malcontent’s Gambit which I think was mentioned in the same post; I haven’t listened to that one at all yet, but I did download a handful of other episodes with interesting titles to see if it’s worth subscribing.

  • http://twitter.com/WCLPeter Rob U

I’ve been listening to “The Good Atheist” since episode one, though I’ve become quite a bit behind since I’ve been busy catching up on “Cognitive Dissonance”.  Jacob from GTA did a guest stint on there to promote his Kickstarter and I really enjoyed Tom and Cecil’s style, so I’ve been listening to their back catalog.

I’ve also done some time listening to “CITR – Radio Freethinkers”, and I’ve been downloading the “Imaginary Friends Show” though I’ll admit I haven’t listened to one yet – I only get about 20 minutes a day to listen to a podcast so it takes me 3 days or so to get through an hour show.

“Skepticality” is also another favourite, but like GTA I’ve gotten way behind since I’m catching up on CD.  :-)

  • MegaZeusThor

The Atheist Experience (although it’s sort of a public access TV show),
Godless Bitches, The Non-Prophets, & The Thinking Atheist.

I’ll check out others (Ardent Atheist; Penn’s Sunday School, Ask an Atheist, etc) and listen to them for a time as well.)

Next week Hemant, do a similar post about the YouTube atheists we subscribe to.

  • Vicki Williams

Thanks – I’ll check your podcast out.  I love A Christian and an Atheist – but they have been silent for a while.

  • CoboWowbo

  • Scepter37

Thomas and the Bible. very funny, you’ll love it!

  • Paul Iannacone

Never really listened to many, but started listening to Left Hemispheres, because they are friends, and it’s not too bad.

  • http://www.facebook.com/AnonymousBoy Larry Meredith

not really into podcasts. Only podcast I listen to is a gaming one. might check out some on this list.

  • http://profiles.google.com/conticreative Marco Conti

    The Thinking Atheist
    The Atheist Experience

  • amycas

    Ask an Atheist
    The Atheist Experience
    Reasonable Doubts
    Godless Bitches

There are a few more that I can’t remember right now.
Oh, and Radiolab. It’s not an atheist podcast, but it’s still pretty awesome.
If anyone is wondering, Irreligiosophy is no longer making episodes, but the ones they have are great (about 30 episodes I think).

  • Dion Riley

Almost everything on Freethought Radio. I have it setup on my Squeezebox Radio and as a preset with my Tunein Radio app on all my devices.  They play many of the podcasts listed here, including The American Heathen (with RJ Evans, John Mill and Al Stefanelli), Reapsow Radio. Their website is in need of an update, but the variety of content is worth the cost (free). Tom Leykis and his “Ask an Atheist” segment is always entertaining, also available on TuneIn.

  • John P. Sullivan

I like many of the podcasts mentioned here, but I want to put in a plug for what might be my new favorite: Think Atheist  (not to be confused with “The Thinking Atheist”).  Really great interviews with great guests. The host Greg knows his stuff!

  • Chakolate

And maybe do another post with all the recommended podcasts?  Lots of people won’t click through to the comments, but will read the post.

  • nonfictions

I really enjoy American Freethought Podcast. I sometimes listen to The Thinking Atheist’s podcast on youtube.

  • Rebecca Hensler
  • http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/ Hemant Mehta

    Will do.

  • thecaptain

    Oh no, Ross and Carrie!

  • http://askanatheist.tv/ Rebecca

I’m on the production team for Ask An Atheist.  Podcast Ateorizar, LAF, and Godless Bitches occasionally.

  • http://askanatheist.tv/ Rebecca

D’oh, meant to say I listen to the last 3 occasionally, not to imply that I help produce any of those ones.  Buh.

  • dorothy30

I’m an atheist that does a comic book/movies/TV/gaming podcast. That almost counts lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/nick.sirman Nick Sirman

Avoiding the ones everyone else mentioned

Thomas and the bible – just started, but not bad so farCognitive dissonance – definitely nsfw
Logically critical – I wish this guy was still doing hte show, but these are some of the funniest things I’ve ever heard

  • http://twitter.com/iamcuriousblue iamcuriousblue

Point of Inquiry (http://www.pointofinquiry.org/ ), mainly. It’s fantastic.

Other than that, I tend to listen to science podcasts, notably Science Friday, more than atheist ones.

  • Brian Thomson

I only have one on my list at the moment: the feed Pat Condell provides with audio from his YouTube videos. I’m struggling to find podcasts that are *short* and to the point, since I have only limited time for listening to podcasts. Too many of them seem to have people waffling on about stuff just to fill time, and I don’t get it. This is not radio: if you have 5 minutes of content, then make a 5-minute podcast, and let the listener move on. To be frank: atheism is just normal to me, and I don’t find it all that interesting as a podcast subject.

  • Marco.

Me da mucho gusto saber que tienes un podcast en español. Ahora podre mandar a algunos amigos que solo escuchan radio en español y pues yo tambien los voy a escuchar a ustedes.

  • Salwinder

One to avoid is Skeptiko – this is NOT a skeptical podcast but is deliberately misleadingly titled as such to get skeptics reeled in. Several guests well respected in the skeptical movement have been duped into being a guest on this show, only to have their words edited and in some cases deleted in order to make the host look lik they won the argument. AVOID.

I used to listen to SGU but find the occasional sneering and mocking a little grating – unfortunately quite a few skeptical podcasts take this tone and I can get boring very quickly. The Thinking Atheist is very good indeed – the host is excellent at making the listener reflect on the issues of the day. Skeptic is brilliant for bite-sized debunking and The Atheist Experience is often very funny as the hosts frequently face-palm during calls from the religious!

  • http://www.laughinginpurgatory.com/ Andrew Hall

I’ve been listening to: Left Hemispheres, Connected Comedy, Think Atheist, and Grammar Girls podcasts.

  • Gordon Duffy

     wow, you stole my list!

  • None

Although not American, I would put “American Freethought” near the top of the list.  Of the real Atheist-oriented podcasts, has th best discussion and news coverage.

I used to rank Point of Inquiry top, but that was when DJ Groethe did the interviewing.  Still good, but the guest and quality of discussion from DJ groethe has not been matched.

While not technically an Atheist podcast, Steve Novella on the the Skeptics Guide the Universe, as others have mentioned, is always an excellent listen.

  • http://boldquestions.wordpress.com/ Ubi Dubium

These have already been mentioned, but I listen to:

    Skeptic’s Guide to the Universe
    Oh No, Ross and Carrie!
    Life After Faith

    and watch The Atheist Experience.

  • Mrchandler

Reasonable Doubts, The Human Bible, SGU, Skeptically Speaking

  • http://twitter.com/Godless_in_MK Paul Baird

    The Pod Delusion
    Skepticule Extra

  • http://profiles.google.com/spurll Gem Newman

Life, the Universe & Everything Else, a Canadian show about secular humanism and scientific skepticism! Of course, I am one of the producers, so I’m contractually obligated to listen to it.

  • http://twitter.com/hermione_50 Mariana Precedo

    The Non-Prophets
    The Thinking Atheist
    Point of Inquiry

  • Skeptifilmmaker

The Skeptic Wire! I cohost this with two others and while we are not a specifically atheism or skeptic podcast (we’ve been known to delve into human rights, anthropology, etc) we do try to keep it fun. Check out our latest episode here: http://skepticwire.blogspot.com/2012/09/episode-075-travels-to-exotic-locations.html

  • Amakudari

The only caveat for Penn’s Sunday School is that the topics are all over the place: atheism, show business, music, a bit of libertarianism here and there, etc. All are interesting, but I like to have a better idea before I listen. For religion-related episodes, this week’s interview with Bill Nye was pretty good, and some of the first shows were directly about atheism.

  • http://www.facebook.com/todd.stiefel Todd Stiefel

I co-host the American Humanist Association’s podcast: The Humanist Hour:  http://podcast.thehumanist.org/

Check it out, if you haven’t.  Feedback on the show is welcome.  Thanks, Todd

  • Chakolate

Has anybody mentioned Skeptoid yet?  Short and to the point, well-researched – it doesn’t get much better than that.

  • http://twitter.com/fokm fokm

I started my own podcast a few months ago — The Friends of Kevin Murphy podcast: FOKMCAST. I talk about being Atheist from time to time, including the episode I’m uploading now. Search iTunes and Stitcher and you’ll find me. Enjoy.

  • Chris Calato

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned http://achristianandanatheist.com/. This was one of the first I started listening to. They haven’t had a new episode in a while but there are 100+ archived. Hopefully they return in some fashion.

  • A3Kr0n

I listen to no podcasts. I find them excruciatingly boring.

  • http://www.everydayintheparkwithgeorge.com/ Matt E

I like most of the ones listed here but they all tend to be on the serious side (though the SGU team know how to cut it up pretty good). On the lighter side I’d like to mention The Church of Awesome. I also dearly miss Irreligiosophy, plus I need to give another shout out to my Ask An Atheist homies!

  • http://www.dwnomad.com Dustin Williams

A friend and I host the Atheist Nomads. It’s still a pretty new podcast, but we’ve already got 10 episodes out and plan on keeping them coming.

  • Barefoot Bree

My favorites have all been mentioned, but I’m giving another bump to a couple that were only listed once or twice:

Consequence – answers the question “what’s the harm?” about all sorts of religious and scientific nonsense

Cognitive Dissonance – I love these guys! NSFW!!!!

Best of the Left – not strictly atheist (at all); it’s a Left-leaning podcast aggregator, so it’s mostly news and politics. But they do get anti-religious licks in, too, especially when it intersects with the aforementioned news and politics.

Now, you wanna talk history podcasts? :D

  • Minus

Can’t believe no one has mentioned the Bible Geek.  Bob’s politics sometimes grate, but his warmth, sense of humor, and incredible store of knowledge make this the most consistently entertaining of the podcasts I listen to.  And he puts out more shows in a week them some others do in a month.

  • Rich

    I haven’t seen anyone mention

    Thank God I’m Atheist

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrewtheatheist Andrew Garber

    http://imaginaryfriendsshow.com/, The one, true podcast!!

  • Jakefw

You should definitely check out The ImaginaryFriendsShow.com Podcast (http://ImaginaryFriendsShow.com) and The Secular World Podcast (run by Atheist Alliance International – http://atheistalliance.org/secular-world/podcast) both are hosted by Aussie atheist author, Jake Farr-Wharton.

  • theallmatty

Tom Leykis. Leykis 101. He did a popular FM radio show with a segment called Ask an Atheist for years.

  • Kegleneq

Seriously…not one other person listens to Citizen Radio? They may not exactly be classified as an atheist show, but they are atheist and commonly antagonize up tight people. Check them out at http://www.wearcitizenradio.com.

  • Sindigo

Cognitive Dissonance. It’s as NSFW as can be and I love it. Also, the Pod Delusion which isn’t explicitly Atheist but is sceptical and, I think a necessary listen if you’re in the UK. Oh, and of course Skeptics with a K, which is funny and awesome in equal measure.

  • Fletch

Since everyone else is plugging their own stuff, I’ll say “Reasonable Doubts” is a damn fine show.

And also, I’d like to let people know that I run a radio station that broadcasts many of the shows mentioned here and other skeptical programs including: SGU, Skeptoid, Skeptically Speaking, Point of Inquiry, Atheist Experience, Token Skeptic, Freethought Radio, Center Stage, Human Bible, Skepticality, American Freethought, American Atheist, Appreciate Your Mind, Humanist Hour, MonsterTalk, QuackCast, Rationally Speaking, Secular World, and a bunch of good science programming as well.   Anyway, if you’re interested you can check it out here: http://www.publicrealityradio.org

All the usual and of course my own: C-Webb’s Sunday School at atheistsocialworker.org

  • Chris

Reasonable Doubts… I’ve stopped with all the others. I don’t care about ‘debating’ with the religious. I want to know WHY we have beliefs.

  • Evan

    Reasonable Doubts!

The rest are just tangentially related: Culture Wars Radio, Skeptic’s Guide, Skeptoid, Citizen Radio. Oh! And of course, Point of Inquiry!

  • BlingBlong

Irreligiosophy  is making episodes again, but with a different co-host

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=501552885 Matthew Wylie

    Reasonable Doubts is great!

  • Darkecco209

Check out Irreligiosophy witty and funny.

  • http://www.facebook.com/paul.wiele Paul Wiele

I’ve never heavily gotten into podcasts in general, but I listen to Reasonable Doubts and They Might Be Giants (who, although not explicitly atheist, are at least pro-science).

  • Darkecco209

What do you mean miss Irrelgiosophy? Have they stopped making them? Boy I hope not I just found out about it and have been going though about 5 episodes a day. I will be sad if they don’t do it anymore.

  • Ken Kressin

Reasonable Doubts has been exceptional. Many high quality, intellectual, and funny episodes.

  • Kim Saccone

My favorite is Reasonable Doubts on Freethought Blogs. But I also occasionally listen to Godless Bitches and Atheist Experience.

  • http://www.facebook.com/norma.laay Norma Laay

Reasonable Doubts. The intellectual approach. Cram-packed full of research and high level discussion.

  • http://www.facebook.com/briancposey Brian C Posey

Reasonable Doubts, The Atheist Experience, The Non-Prophets, Godless Bitches, The Humanist Hour, Living After Faith and Rationally Speaking.

Shit, I listen to a lot of podcasts.I also still have Atheist News and Chariots of Iron on my iTunes list but they don’t put episodes out anymore.  Sad.

  • Censeo

Though i haven’t checked out every podcast mentioned in the comments, reasonable doubts is at this moment my favorite. I especially appreciate their dedication to structure long counter arguments to different apologetic arguments.

  • http://profiles.google.com/jwolforth John Wolforth

Reasonable Doubts. The title says it. They do great research and present their data well, making their arguments reasonably. But they never stop having fun with it and don’t mince words if someone gets on their, umm, ahem, “bad” list. I should add they also have a “props” list.

  • PhysicsVeganBrian

I see I’m a little late to the party, but the only podcast I listen to is called Reason
It’s done by some friends of mine, but I assure you that that alone would not be enough to hold my fleeting attention.
Edit: I realize I should embellish a bit. It’s done by two guys, one with a science background and one with a… humanistic background (he has a philosophy degree, talks about history a fair bit.) They play well to their individual strengths with what they contribute each week. Possibly the best part is the end of each episode when they have a debate; the debate and what exactly the sides are is predetermined, but who argues which side is not. The debate topics are also not always serious, which makes for a good time.

  • Matthew

    Cognitive dissonance

    The church of awesome

Irreligoisophy – soon to be ‘unapologetics’

Finished most every other podcast mentioned

  • Hammer

Irreligiosophy (making episodes again, by the way!)
    Reasonable Doubts

  • http://twitter.com/Luckette808 Richard Savery

Good list. ‘Think Atheist’ is my favorite podcast. It features interviews with scientists and philosophers.

  • http://twitter.com/Luckette808 Richard Savery

Little Atoms and Little Atoms Road Trip are both excellent.

  • http://twitter.com/Luckette808 Richard Savery

‘The Think Atheist Show’ podcast is excellent. Scientists and philosophers are interviewed weekly. Ardent Atheist is very funny and explicit.

  • Dan

Thank God I’m Atheist (www.thankgodimatheist.com) is a delightful show. And I don’t just say that because I’m one of the co-hosts. I also say it because I want to entice you to listen to it.
