PBS To Air Three-Part Documentary Series on the Religiously Unaffiliated

PBS’ Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly partnered up with the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life to bring us that survey everyone was talking about today.

They are going to be airing a three-part mini-series on the “The Rise of the Religiously Unaffiliated” and a preview is now available online. Lots of faces in the clip should be familiar to readers of this site!

The first segment, None of the Above: Who Are They, will begin airing on public television stations nationwide on October 12, 2012. It provides an overview of who these religiously unaffiliated people are and what they believe. The story will be reported by R&E Host Bob Abernethy and produced by Marcia Henning.

The second segment, None of the Above: Political Implications, which begins airing on October 19, 2012, focuses on how the growing number of religiously unaffiliated citizens could affect elections and the role of religion in politics. The segment will be reported by R&E Managing Editor Kim Lawton and produced by Patti Jette Hanley.

The third segment None of the Above: Religious Implications, which begins airing October 26, 2012, looks at the possible influence of this trend on religious congregations and institutions. This segment will be reported by R&E Contributing Correspondent Deborah Potter and produced by Susan Goldstein.

No wonder Mitt Romney wants to cut funding to PBS.

This should be entitled “Rise of the noxious mediocrities.” (Although, perhaps I should be more charitable, since I am an unaffiliated Christian.)

All I have to say is “F’in Awesome!”

    Aaawwww shit!

  • JT

Yeah, those aren’t showing here in South Carolina. Not surprised. Guess I’ll have to watch them online.

?? I just looked on my channel line up and it’s not showing for October 12.  Could dates be wrong?

  • Tom_Nightingale

Woot!  Looking forward to seeing the segments with Greg Epstein and the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard!

Unless  it has been re-titled “To Be  Announced” it may not be on my local station.

Some would say: “All the more reason to cut their funding!”

  • amycas

Anyone else have a problem getting the video to play?

  • Andrew B.

Thanks for the great comment, friend!  We sure appreciate it!

FYI: Some PBS stations are airing this show (not just these 3 episodes of it) on Saturday morning (some early Saturday morning) instead of Friday evening.

  • rocketdave

I’ve got five PBS channels here in Milwaukee and it doesn’t appear to be airing on any of them.

In Minneapolis-St. Paul, it’s on Sunday morning at 11:30. Looks like I will have to miss church again.

Perhaps you should be more charitable? Uh, yeah, perhaps, maybe, a bit.

  • Miss_Beara

I can’t find it on any of the Chicago PBS stations unless I am not seeing it.

  • Miss_Beara

I went to their website and it still won’t play for me.

And I cannot find a listing for it for my area.

I love how much this segment used footage from the Reason Rally!  Yay PBS!

  • Scantilycladoranges

No reason to be more charitable. Christianity has a long history of being violent, rude and repugnant. The idea that christianity is synonymous with good is a fallacy that should be corrected at every oppourtunity. So no continue with your current attitude, your religion has a proud tradition of it.

  • Tainda

I’m just impressed you spelled everything correctly!  Way to go little buddy!

    Here Trolly, Trolly, Troll……

  • ragarth

Representin’ huh? Acid laced, bigoted vitriol befits your religious affiliation well.

Since this happened so quickly, I suspect all the local channels haven’t put it into their lineup yet. They will squeeze it in as they get the word. I’d suggest everybody (including me!) keep checking.

Hemant, could you pretty please remind us again in a couple of days?

  • Jessica

I’m so glad to see this- When I was at the Rally, I kept seeing professional-type cameras. I assumed they were for the news or something, but there didn’t seem to be that much media coverage at the time.  This must have been what they were for.  I am not ashamed to say that I am going to be searching for my own face while watching this! :)

  • amycas

Thanks. I couldn’t get it to work on their website either.

If you are having trouble finding the show on your local PBS station, make sure you are looking for  “Religion and Ethics Newseekly.  ”
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/religionandethics/ ” I have Dish, and I just searched on the word, “Religion” and found it airing this Sunday at 9:30 AM.  It’s episode 799.  (BTW, I was pleasantly surprised when I did my search that this was the only show that appeared.  I actually was afraid I was going to have hundreds of programs with the word, “religion”, to pop up.  I take that as a good sign.)

South Carolina – showing on the HD channel according to the website

Who can tell me what the music playing in the background was? I’ve heard it before several times, but I can’t remember its name or where it’s from. FYI, I’m wondering why they chose it. Also, was it PBS who a couple of years ago had a miniseries on religion in America that was an absolute abomination – seemingly trying to make the case that this is a Christian country, with an all-Christian history?

  • http://www.facebook.com/conticreative Marco C

I wasn’t sure if you were serious about the music or you were trying to make a joke of sorts, but it’s REM “Losing my Religion”.

  • Willy Occam

Not to mention proper grammar and punctuation!  I must say, I am duly impressed.

  • Willy Occam

Can’t find it on WWJD in Lynchburg either.
