What Atheist YouTubers Do You Watch?

Since I learned about some new atheist podcasts a couple of months ago, let’s try something different: Which YouTube atheists should we be watching?

If you post videos yourself or have some favorites, please leave a link to them in the comments!

About Hemant Mehta

Hemant Mehta is the editor of Friendly Atheist, appears on the Atheist Voice channel on YouTube, and co-hosts the uniquely-named Friendly Atheist Podcast. You can read much more about him here.

  • http://MichelFortin.com Michel Fortin
  • http://twitter.com/DragonkinSverd Steven Sword

All the ones Michel listed are great. Here’s my drug of choice for social commentary with snark. https://www.youtube.com/user/theamazingatheist?feature=results_main

    • Flux1370

If by “social commentary with snark” you mean “misogyny with rape threats”, and “mocking kids [specifically, one Amanda Todd] who’ve been driven to suicide by bullying”, then yes, he’s definitely the one to choose.

    • brianmacker

I have a nephew who was posting AA’s videos to his Facebook page, and every one of the were idiotic. His videos on free market capitalism were particularly moronic.

    • uhhuh

This guy is just a run-of-the-mill jerk who happens to be an atheist, nothing amazing.

  • Itskeerstin

My channel isn’t an atheist channel but I am an atheist. I just make beauty videos. Lol. http://Www.youtube.com/itskeerstin

  • Bill

None at all.  Not because I’m opposed to atheism (I am an atheist), but because I’m an old fart who doesn’t get the whole “social media” thing.

(Is there a word for “almost a Luddite but not wishing to destroy anything”?)

    • http://twitter.com/AchronTimeless Achron Timeless

Well, youtube is about as “social media” as a HAM radio. It’s essentially the same thing, except with video and only one-way broadcast.

      • jdm8

I wouldn’t go that far, but it is most often used as a broadcast medium. It has many features found in social media, but they are more secondary to the video playback. There are ways to make video replies and have it attached to the original video. And then there’s the discussion that’s attached to most videos, you can subscribe to individuals, private message each other. It’s just not as cohesive as Facebook might be.

        • http://twitter.com/AchronTimeless Achron Timeless

And here you’ve missed the entire point of my response by ignoring the context of what it was in reply to. Bill was saying he just didn’t get the whole social media thing, and I was pointing out that the majority of what happens on youtube isn’t remotely what you’d lump in with what is commonly called “social media”. Thus, youtube was something that could be enjoyed even if you weren’t into the whole twitter/facebook/foursquare/whatever mess.

I’m not sure why you got your fur raised over that very factual statement and felt the need to inflate the importance of comments or video responses or the ability to follow people or whatever vestigial bits of what have become common aspects of the social media conglomerates, but that’s outside the bounds of what was being discussed. If you want to think of youtube as some amazing social sphere, then go do that. My reply wasn’t for you.

          • jdm8

I don’t see where you think I was angry. But you seem angry. You’re clearly reading something into my comment that wasn’t there, and I had no malice when I wrote it.

            • http://twitter.com/AchronTimeless Achron Timeless

Cute. The ol’ “you can’t possibly know how I feel, but I know exactly how you feel” gambit. You sure you’re on the right blog?

              • http://twitter.com/rlrose328 Kerri Russ

Are you kidding me?  Holy mother of pearl… this is what you are choosing to argue about?  jdm did not seem angry but was adding to your post some things that make it like social media but not quite.  In a way, he was agreeing with you.  And you jump on him, he responded nicely and you’re jumping on him again.  Gee willkers!!  Just sit down and lay off the caffeine for a while.

i don’t watch a lot of youtube, unless i’m looking for something netflix doesn’t carry. but i wanted to thank you, for listing the names of those channels or whatever it’s called.

i am very glad youtube exists. i hope the people who own it make a lot of money. but its one, seriously critical flaw? not embedding the name or ID of the person(s) or title or other identifying information in the web address. http://www.youtube.3209572034853209457309aekht is not helpful. i’ve learned my lesson when it comes to clicking just any old link. viruses, system crashes, and other problems that way lie. so unless it’s coming from a trusted source, i don’t click on youtube links. i’ll go to youtube and search out topics my self, but youtube links in comments, i don’t generally click. sorry, i’m just too cautious to risk my machine and data.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/GodVlogger?feature=mhee GodVlogger (on YouTube)

If you hover over any of those links you will see that it takes you to YouTube.com/user/ then the channel name

  • jose

Too impatient to just sit there and watch somebody’s face for 5 minutes as they spell out an argument or an anecdote… the blog post is more practical a medium for that stuff. I’d be interested in channels that do something different that don’t translate well into written words. The only example I know is the Skeptically Pwnd! channel.

    • Flux1370

I completely agree that talking heads are boring.  That’s why atheist youtubers like potholer54, darkmatter2525, QualiaSoup, TheraminTrees, and NonStampCollector might be more your cup of tea.

      • jose

         Thanks! Will check’em out.

Nonstampcollector is pretty good, look up the quiz show.  Quite funny.

    • Danmcpeek

I could watch Cristina Rad’s face for a long, long , very long time and she’s
      definitely not boring.

      • http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/ Kevin_Of_Bangor

        I love her accent too.

      • Baal

I had a totally inappropriate to work laughing fit (complete with tears) over her advice to trolls video.  As she said, it’s ok to cry as you do this.

Sure, it’s just me, not saying you can’t do whatever :) thanks

    Edward Tarte, of course!

    • Edward Tarte

A3Kr0n, thank you so much.  I am age 78, ex-Catholic priest, now atheist. On YouTube I do religion, music, and math.  And I do a weekly video here at FriendlyAtheist.

      • Mark Girard

Keep ‘em coming!  I love your videos.

  • Sackbut

I enjoy the occasional video from QualiaSoup, DarkMatter2525, and NonStampCollector, but I don’t make a point of watching videos.  I follow blogs via RSS, and frequently read them on my phone, often under conditions where silence is preferred.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1025224665 Matthew Crocker

The only ones I really follow are The Atheist Experience (always a good time, although I do occasionally wish they were a little bit nicer, although I can understand why not) and my latest addiction, CultOfDusty. Check out his “I Am Proud To Be an Atheist” if you haven’t yet seen it. And can handle some adult language.

I barely have time to keep up with your blog and Gawker during my workday.  Whenever I’ve tried to watch videos by any talking heads, I just can’t sustain the attention required.  (The only atheist-related video I’ve watched from start to finish and then had the hubby and kid watch as well was your video, Hemant, with the math component… can’t remember when or what it was but it was brilliant.  I prefer a blog with comments that I can visit for a few minutes and then move on.  (When you work on production for pennies a line, you have to be choosy where you spend 5 minutes.)

  • SeekerLancer

I stopped watching atheist youtubers. When I’m listening they’re just preaching to the choir, repeating the same things I’ve heard a thousand times before. It usually just depresses me.

Some of the more comedy-based channels are alright I guess.

  • http://skepticink.com/dangeroustalk Dangerous Talk

I kick it old school. The best atheist YouTube channel is still God Is Imanginary: http://www.youtube.com/user/GIIvideo
He hasn’t put out a video is a long time but the few that he has up are awesome and are the best on the web. I think he only has 12 videos and I think they are must see videos for all atheists. Of course all the usual atheists on YouTube are awesome too but I really think everyone should check out GIIvideo if you haven’t already. His praying t the milk jug video is is epic.

I also am a big fan of ProfMTH.

Being subscribed to 300 people or so, I’ll just pick the best one’s out in alphabetical order.
AwesomeRants – lovely young girl who has a lot more experience in life than most other people.
C0nc0rdance – always brings a smile to my face. His commentary is balanced, his research excellent and his voice outstanding.
Darkmatter2525 – funny animations, but always with some message behind them. Also check out his other channel DarkAntics
GrapplingIgnorance – has a way with words which would make you think he’d find a better job with our opponents. He’s fine with teaching English. Won’t go further into detail.
Klingschor – probably the best source of anti-Islamic polemic. Also has a second channel LOrientalist.
Noelplum99 – probably the most undersubbed oldtimer. Has made videos since 2008, quality videos presently.
Steve Shives – previously known as stevelikes2curse. Has a couple awesome series you don’t want to miss out on.
TheTruePooka – a vlog once in a while won’t hurt ya, especially not if it’s from someone like “the Pook”
WildwoodClaire1 – does a series called “Coffee with Claire” for Sundays and has videos every once in a while about fossils and geology. Have I mentioned she’s a geologist?
Wisdominnature7 – because you can’t do without some philosophy every once in a while.
Zaunstar – just gives great commentary.

    • Sharon Hypatiia

I am a BIG fan of WildwoodClaire1. She doesn’t talk much about atheism but it is the background to the social and political commentary in her “Coffee” series (where she hands out the “Dim Bulb of the Week” award). Her videos are nicely edited and she plays pre & post WWII music.
She has a whole series rebutting Creationist geology’ and an ongoing series on pure geology topics  (like Supervolcanoes and the Appalachian Mountains).

  • Crodley

Can’t believe nobody mentioned the laugh-fest that is Edward Current.  He’s an atheist musician who makes some VERY funny videos.  I especially love when he pretends to be a devout xtian putting us atheists in our place.  And by the way why is it “xtian” instead of “Ttian”  doesn’t the myth state he was killed on a T instead of an X?

  • Crodley

Ack forgot the link :)  http://www.youtube.com/user/EdwardCurrent/videos?view=0

  • Drew M.

None in general. I’m too impatient to listen to something I can read in 1/4 the time.  I try and watch The Thinking Atheist’s non-podcast stuff once in a while.

  • http://www.flickr.com/groups/invisiblepinkunicorn Anna

None. I get my fill of atheism-related news here. I’m not interested in amateur videos or podcasts. I use YouTube for 80s nostalgia, movies, music, etc. I do have an “atheist” playlist, but it’s rarely updated.

  • http://www.facebook.com/breanna.sullivan.148116 Breanna Sullivan

I’m so glad no one has mentioned TheAmazingAtheist. He’s a pig.

Not a fan of Thunderfoot either, for the same reasons as TAA, but I saw him mentioned only once.

Everyone else I do watch has already been mentioned. Cheers!

    • http://twitter.com/AchronTimeless Achron Timeless

“for the same reasons” = “pig” since that was the only reason you mentioned. TAA, no argument there other than being disappointed that a single word was all you could manage. He goes for shock value. Have to ask why you’d equate Thunderf00t to him though?

I have my suspicions as to where you were given that opinion, and if they’re true I wouldn’t exactly be bragging about falling for it. Still, would love to hear your justification on the odd chance you have a valid opinion rather than one handed to you by a certain little group of self-important atheists and regurgitated without thought.

I’m guessing since your only justification this time was “pig”, the next one will be “misogynist” with no further attempt at backing it up either.

      • http://www.facebook.com/breanna.sullivan.148116 Breanna Sullivan

“a single word was all you could manage” … Actually, I can manage much for than that. I simply choose not too.

Also, no one “gave” me the opinion; I’ve done my research, thanks.

And last, all “opinions” are valid. But not all hold much substance.

        • http://twitter.com/AchronTimeless Achron Timeless

          So, just to recap:
You made a statement with no explanation or justification.
I invited you to prove that you actually came to this view on your own instead of just repeating it without thought or validation.
You respond by nitpicking a few details and still not even bothering to try to substantiate you claim.

I’m impressed. You managed to fall short of my low expectations. I’d expected some twisting of reality to back up your claim which would ultimately reveal its source, but instead you sidestep it and act like you’d actually answered. Really? Did you think I wouldn’t notice?

Your strange view that all opinions are valid, I’ll just leave to stand on its own, as it really doesn’t need commentary.

          • EighthDoctor

She voiced an OPINION, dudebro, not asserted a fact.  As such, she is not obliged to provide “justification” to your condescending ass just because you demand it.  The burden of proof does not apply to her opinion any more than it would to mine that Breyers’ Golden Oreo is the best flavor of ice cream.

How about you provide justification for the existence of whatever bad attitude crawled up your ass and died?  Wouldn’t want to risk falling short of my low expectations, now would you?

            • http://twitter.com/AchronTimeless Achron Timeless

Sure. Thunderf00t got invited to the freethought blog group, told he could comment on anything he felt like including other users. He did. PZ Meyers threw a tantrum, set up an army of straw men that he claimed was TF’s arguments, and “heroically” mowed them down. The rest of his little camp started throwing their favorite word around, “misogynist” (which they use so often for anything they disagree with that they’ve basically removed all meaning from it) and never could back up why they were using an emotionally loaded word other than for shock value.

She’s parroting that, and frankly I thought in the skeptic community we ran things based on evidence. So please, forgive me when I see one of our ranks regurgitating unfounded bullshit and endeavor to correct them. I forgot that PZ’s group is doing their best to turn this into a bonafide religion and we’re no longer allowed to question things.

See? That was easy. Now why can’t she do that? Attack *that* behavior for a change instead of valid criticism of bullshit.

The whole saga is openly available on youtube, including both sides of the argument, as well as more posts on blogs than I care to estimate. If you’re ignorant of the situation, it’s not for lack of available information.

              • Flux1370

Wow, you’re not giving a warped and biased account at all!

                • http://twitter.com/AchronTimeless Achron Timeless

Yeah, PZ did throw out a warped and biased account. Recounting it sounds insane because it was insane. Good of you to notice that, you’re half way there.

As the saying goes, humor is the best medicine. Those of you who watch the Daily Show, Stephen Colbert, or Bill Maher know that you can get more real information from comedy than from the main stream media.

My latest favorite YouTuber is OrderoftheGoodDeath, who makes the “Ask a Mortician” videos. I don’t KNOW that she is an atheist, but from the way she discusses death, I’d say that at the very least she is “non-religious”.

  • Shanefla614

Martymer81 doesn’t get enough views IMO. Check him out.

  • Aguz

    Edward Current and Mr. Deity.
    I like comedy.

Wow!  A lot of great ones here I didn’t even know about.
I love vlogs and podcasts because I can listen to them while doing other things.

I just posted about this myself.
    http://freedomofnonbelief.blogspot.com/2012/11/thunderf00t-and-atheism-videos.html

I am pleased to find more.

I still do listen to AA and Thunderf00t.   I KNOW there are many issues people have with them but they do still make a good argument and they are entertaining.

If I stopped listening/watching/reading everyone I had a political or moral objection to what they are like in real life then I wouldn’t have any one to listen to, read or watch.

Thanks to those who listed me in their favorites! I’m flattered! My favorites include WildwoodClaire1 and TheLivingDinosaur. I love Claire’s “Coffee” vids as she covers a wide range of interests and is usually quite topical. TLD is just off the hook with his no-holds-barred approach and charmingly irreverent style!
