Videos from 1991 Feature Richard Dawkins Discussing the Evolution of Life

In 1991, a young Richard Dawkins delivered a series of lectures about the evolution of life called “Growing Up in the Universe.” The five one-hour lectures were broadcast on the BBC as part of the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures (an amusing title for a series of lectures by Dawkins)… but they haven’t been freely available online until now.

Head over to the Royal Institution’s website to watch all five Christmas Lectures right now. If any parts stand out to you, please leave the title, timestamp, and summary in the comments!

I watched these lectures on YouTube, on Dawkins’ official channel (which for some reason I can’t find now), quite some time ago.

Edit: Apparently, the richarddawkinsdotnet account was terminated for copyright infringement. Weird.

Nice to have them all in one place. There’s even a short  “look back” video by Dawkins.

    “In 1991, a young Richard Dawkins…”

When he was a mere toddler of 50!

Yet another reason I remain proud of the BBC and happy to pay the License Fee…

They’ve got some true classics (it is the big thing in educational science in the UK, it’s a proper celeb-fest), check out the 1973 lectures presented by David Attenborough too. Not to mention (when they get round to putting it online) Carl Sagan in 1977
