Atheist Billboards Go Up in Chico, California

This is the design of the new billboards put up by the Butte County Coalition of Reason (in California):

There are twelve of these billboards all across the city of Chico, put up by the United Coalition of Reason at a cost of $3,780.

“We want to let the general public know that we belong to the larger community,” said George Gold, coordinator of the Butte County Coalition of Reason, today.

“We non-theists are your family members, friends, neighbors and co-workers. We’re just like you, except we don’t believe in a supreme being. It’s about time we were equally free to be open about our views,” Gold added.

I love the background design on these billboards. And while the message has had some critics (Capitalizing God?! Joining a “club”?!), the bigger question now is how the community will respond to the signs: with respect or with vandalism.

A beautiful billboard. And so many locations! That simply rocks.

While I believe in a higher power, I think that they have a right to display their sign.

      Well duh, of course.

While I don’t belie in deities, I think you have a right to go to send christmas cards.

Oh wow, I never thought these billboards would make it all the way over here! I’m in one county over from Butte and this is a SUPER religious/conservative area. I didn’t even know we HAD secular groups large enough to put up billboards! Awesome.

That will certainly turn the the non-religious god believers agains atheists. Perhaps half the agnostics too. Maybe someone would put up a sign under the atheist one to say ‘the devil’s more fun’. But of course the religious, the deists and the true agnostics will not be so mean as to make fun of the atheists in the guise of humor.

We is a shakin’ in our shoes! Them god fearin’ peoples ain’t a goin’ to like us lower bein’s havin’ a club of our own.

Now in England, anyone disliking an atheist anything would just be told to get over it. Or if they were particularly obnoxious – to sod off.

$3,780 for 12??  That sounds like quite a bargain! I really like signs like this that are easy to read while driving by.  Well done!

Thanks for noticing our Coalition of Reason launch way out here in Chico, California! So far the response via email and in public has been 100% positive.  Today was the first time I’ve noticed this general perception that whether people agree with us or not, they seem to think we will be met by criticism.  So far, none!

Eh, there’s a sound argument for capitalizing “God,” it’s a proper noun. We capitalize “Bilbo Baggins.” “A god” or “gods” shouldn’t be capitalized.

    • Georgina

A proper noun is only used for the name of  an object or being;  while I would be willing to spell Thor or even Yahweh with a capital letter, this infers that there is a god, whose name is God, and everyone knows which god you are talking about.

There’s a made up rule about commenting on someone else’s grammar in a comment. It has to do with the likelihood of making a mistake yourself.

You’ve mixed up infer and imply.

I’m calling, Don’t as struck within a week.

  • Michael teply

I’m part of the group that put the signs up in Chico California , thanks for mentioning us

  • Michael teply

It didn’t take long for some one to rip the “don’t” off one of our signs. They do that because their god is powerless and impotent to take action for itself.
