Former Survivor Contestant Explains Why He’s an Atheist

If you’re as obsessed with Survivor as I am, then you definitely have a lot of respect for former contestant Yau-Man Chan. He was smart, clever enough to create the first fake Immunity Idol, and incredibly popular throughout his season.

Chan recently filmed a segment for Chris Johnson‘s multimedia book about atheists and what gives them joy and meaning in life.

In the segment below, Chan talks about he grew up in a religious environment but came to realize that the priests didn’t really have all the answers:

On a side note, randomly meeting Chan at The Amazing Meeting 9 was one of the greatest moments *ever*:

Someone reading this has to know producers of that show. Get me on it!

Hemant you would be great on Survivor! I hope someone from the show sees this!

  • Chengis Khan

How will you blog if yo go on the survivor show?

  • Hemant Mehta

    I will gladly take a break :)

  • Scott G.

Have never missed a ‘sode! Hemant, who do you have your money on this current season? Think “The Specialist” will strut to the final council in his pink undies, or will a fan beat the odds and pull an upset?

  • pascalecake

Hemant, if you got on the show, I could die happy. Though it would be incredibly frustrating if people were dicks to you…

Hoping for a Malcolm/Cochran alliance this season. Cochran’s interviews are pure gold!!

  • Hemant Mehta

Pulling for Cochran. Though I’m not really a fan of bringing back old players… I like the “pure” version where nobody knows anybody else!

  • chicago dyke

i’ve never seen the show. but i endorse Hemant! sadly, i don’t know the producers so i’m not sure my vote will matter. ;-)

    what is it about?

….oh, and if you do get on, be sure to give keys to this blog to at least a few replacement writers. we’d be happy for you, but miss you. i can’t go without my daily atheist fix.

Not knowing anything about the show, can anyone tell us what a “fake immunity idol” is in a reasonably not tl;dr;?

  • Max Bingman

Yau-Man was one of the greatest Survivors EVER!

  • Max Bingman

Immunity Idols are hidden on the island. If you find one, you can save yourself if you’re voted out. Yau basically took a rock or stick or something and made it look like an idol, fooling his competitors into thinking they had immunity.

  • Blacksheep

I haven’t watched in a few years, but…Hidden “immunity idols”, which make the finder immune to being voted off of the show, are for that reason very valuable. (other immunity idols / necklaces can be won in competition). There are all kinds of strategies related to the immunity idols. By making a fake immunity idol, it might accomplish two things: 1. The finder would (wrongly) assume he or she was safe, (all kinds of implications there) and 2. upon hearing that an II was found, everyone else would stop looking, except for the one who made the idol. (I know you don’t need that detailed of a description).

If you look very close you will see Malcolm has a tat of the FSM on his upper right arm.

  • Kevin_Of_Bangor

If that crazy nut of a man is not voted out in the next couple of weeks I will not be pleased. I cannot stand to listen to him talk.

  • Martin Grover

In one of the seasons, and several afterwards, there was an Immunity Idol that you could find somewhere on the island and trade in for immunity at the next tribal council. Yau Man realized that, since nobody knew what it was supposed to look like, he could just be real sneaky and make one. It was brilliant.

  • Martin Grover

Backing up further, the show is about a bunch of people on an island or in some other remote area who have to participate in challenges, Then have tribal council meetings where one is voted off each episode.
