Westboro Baptist Church: Oklahoma Tornado is the Result of Kevin Durant Affirming Jason Collins’ Homosexuality

Last month, NBA player Jason Collins came out as gay.

NBA superstar Kevin Durant (of the Oklahoma City Thunder), when asked for comment, said this:

“If the guy’s happy, whatever he does, that’s cool with me,” Thunder star Kevin Durant said at Monday’s shootaround. “Jason Collins, playing against him, seems like a great guy. Never got the chance to know him. But if he’s happy, that’s cool. Nobody has any right to judge. He’s his own man. Makes his own decisions. As NBA players, it’s like a big group of guys, kind of like a brotherhood. I know I support him. Like I said, I don’t really know him, so whatever decision he makes is something he really thought was good for him. Nothing nobody else can say about him. As long as he’s happy, it’s cool.”

So obviously — obviously — that’s why a tornado just hit Moore, Oklahoma… according to Westboro Baptist Church’s Fred Phelps, Jr. (son of the church’s founder):

All of you who had picked Pat Robertson in your first-religious-person-to-say-something-stupid-after-the-awful-tragedy poll owe me $5.

Yes, Phelps is crazy. No, he doesn’t represent mainstream (and even most fringe) Christians. But I promise you it won’t just be outliers like Phelps who rationalize “God’s will” by saying He’s upset about whatever issue they happen to complain about.

¨But I promise you it won’t just be outliers like Phelps who rationalize “God’s will” by saying He’s upset about whatever issue they happen to complain about.¨

Just like it wont be the outliers in the atheist comunity that use a tragedy to focus on the worst within a group of people, in order to pat themselves on the back.

There are more religious people that will give their time and money to the victims to offset anything Phelps can say.

Does the blatant one sided biased mentality on here bother anyone?

  • JohnH2

Well I just read a book claiming that atheists are all mini-wannabe Stalins and follow the devil. It had references and “facts” so it must be true via the standard of truth found here.

  • TiltedHorizon

“OK Thunder’s Durant flips God by praising fag Collins. God smashes OK. You do the math.”

All this time I thought tornadoes were caused by two differing air masses meeting. Science has failed me.

So quick question, now that we know what caused this one, what caused the other 61? (OK averages about 62 per year, 63 in 2012 http://www.srh.noaa.gov/oun/?n=tornadodata-ok-2012 )

  • TiltedHorizon

All atheists are guilty of are exposing the wolves in sheep’s clothing. If you won’t keep your own house clean, don’t be mad when others call attention to the mess.

  • Bdole

I was wondering when we were going to hear about the sins of White, American Christians.
Actually, that’s a lie. I NEVER expected to hear anything but sympathy from the bullypulpits of American Christendom for the people of OK.
Enter Westboro. At least they’re honest (and consistent) about who they look down on.

  • Sven2547

What “blatant one-sided mentality” are you referring to here? Hemant made it quite clear that Phelps “doesn’t represent mainstream (and even most fringe) Christians.”

  • Gus Snarp

Only because Pat has already covered Tornadoes in the past by saying that they could be averted if people prayed more. http://www.opposingviews.com/i/society/video-pat-robertson-blames-tornado-victims-not-praying

  • Beth

Hate the belief not the believer ;-)

I did have to turn off my facebook due to religion posts AND people complaining about religious posts.

  • Kevin Sagui

True story – tornadoes NEVER occurred back when Christian hegemony ruled Europe with an iron fist.

  • Gus Snarp

Well obviously someone, somewhere was praising a homosexual. Is there some scale of natural devastation to fame of the person praising a homosexual?

  • Spuddie

“There are more religious people that will give their time and money to the victims to offset anything Phelps can say.”

Yet you feel the need to apologize for Phelps or at the very least don’t bother to call out his callousness. If there was a legitimate another side, then one would worry about a “one sided mentality”. But there isn’t. Somehow it is the atheists who point these things out because religious types don’t want to be seen as criticizing their own.

  • pagansister

As usual, Phelps’s ignorance is showing. It just continues to amaze me that there is anyone on the planet that actually BELIEVES what is said by those “Christians”. They really need to get a life.

  • SteveS

Wouldn’t any self-respecting all-knowing and all-powerful deity just blast Collins and Durant directly? Why destroy the lives and property of a lot of people who have nothing to do with any of it? How does that demonstrate that this god is a force to fear or worship? I will bet the unfortunate people whose lives have been torn apart were mostly good practicing christians. There is more than one member of the Phelps family in sore need of a brain transplant.

  • Richard Melks

Completely idiotic response and exactly the kind of onesided mentality I am talking about. And for the record, I am not a theist, but to say that there is no legitimate other side to “god hates fags” in theism, is absolutely moronic. Ironically, Kevin Durant’s first response to this tragedy was to ask people to pray for the victims, so you would be deluded to think his 1 million dollar donation had nothing to do in part with his theism.

There is no free thinking or intellectual aspect to the type of sophomoric atheism at display here. Just a bunch of emotional diatribes so that unsophisticated thinkers can pat themselves on the back.

OK Thunder’s Durant flips God by praising fag Collins. God smashes OK. You do the math.

France flips God by passing fag marriage bill. God makes Pavlof volcano erupt in Alaska. You do the math.

Minnesota flips God by legalizing fag marriage. God kills Montana State University professor with a landslide in Nepal. You do the math.

Britain flips God by moving fag marriage bill forward. God throws big meteorite at Moon causing explosion equal to five tons of TNT. You do the math.

Yet another member of my family flips God by denouncing and repudiating me as a sick, twisted, hate addict. God makes a giant sweatshop collapse crushing over a thousand garment slaves in Bangladesh. You do the math.

Uh, is that New Math? I never was that good at math. How about this, Fred?

France passes same-sex marriage legislation. Far-right essayist Dominique Venner writes anti-gay rant and then kills himself at Notre Dame altar.

Ok, let’s see… One homophobic right-wing bigot, plus one national equal rights legislation, plus one gay-hating public rant, times one famous gothic cathedral, plus (one mouth divided by one handgun barrel), plus one bullet to the power of one gram of gunpowder, minus one medulla oblongata equals…….

    Hey, math can be fun!

  • Ders

Where, exactly, was Hemant wrong? If the sentence you quoted in your first comment is where you think he was incorrect, then you’ve got some explaining to do. Even the most mainstream Christians will tell you that the destruction that we see in the world is a result of “original sin”. According to their doctrine we live in a “fallen world”. We may have free will of our own, but certainly aspects of nature must fall under God’s all-powerful reign. Following this logic, any act of destruction or cause of suffering is a result of original man’s sin because it certainly can’t be the act of an all-loving God.

If all this is true, God’s will is responsible for the tornado. Most Christians will point to a mythical naked girl in a garden as the cause instead of a basketball player, but they’ll still tell you that this is all a part of God’s “mysterious plan”.

Now please respond to that without calling me sophomoric.

“OK Thunder’s Durant flips God by praising fag Collins. God smashes OK. You do the math.”

Just for saying something nice about a gay dude? Hmm… Las Vegas must exist in some divine, perpetual blind spot of this great and vengeful deity who seems to like wrecking the shit out of everything over the pettiest of offenses. Well, if a voice does comes thundering from the sky, I know where I’m hiding.

  • WallofSleep

The Phelps Cult exists, ipso facto, there is no god.

  • 3lemenope

One of the really neat parts of religious thought in general is, you will always find what you are looking for, even if it isn’t there.

  • WallofSleep

“OK Thunder’s Durant flips God by praising fag Collins. God smashes OK. You do the math.”

(Supportive Comment About Homosexual + Bronze Age Superstition) x Fanatical Bigots = One Metric Fuck-ton of Inane Bullshit

Is that sufficient, or do I need to show my work?

“But I promise you it won’t just be outliers like Phelps who rationalize “God’s will” by saying He’s upset about whatever issue they happen to complain about.”

My own mother didn’t even need an issue to complain about. She knows absolutetly nothing about Moore, apart from the fact that it was repeatedly hit by devastating tornadoes, and that alone was enough for her to say that it’s most likely a wicked town. I have no words.

  • Ders

I really dislike contrarians. This is especially true when they get self-righteous about it. Honestly, I’m not surprised you wouldn’t respond any more. You waltzed in and found a way to feel superior to everybody. I don’t care what your world view is, you are the unsophisticated thinker here that is patting yourself on the back.

  • Baby_Raptor

He’s telling the truth. I’m sorry you don’t like to hear it, but your claims of bias are bullshit. He even blatantly said that the view doesn’t represent everyone. Acknowledging that some people will use to to their agendas doesn’t…Why am I wasting my time? You clearly see persecution, and you’re gonna whine about it.

And no, random people giving money to help doesn’t offset what this asshole does. There’s no correlation whatsoever. Unless you can somehow explain to me how that money will repair the damage this man and his cult have caused?

  • Baby_Raptor

Small minded theists are something else, aren’t they?

The one I currently support has made several snide comments. I shut him up by reminding him that most of his family likes in Oklahoma, so either his family is a wicked pile or God can’t aim.

Can I have a go too?

Multiply a metric f*ck ton mountain of bullsh*t by an ever reducing percentage of religiously raddled bigots. Subtract public support and sympathy for the bigotry. Divide by one progressive legislative victory after another.

Here in LimeyLand we are one more vote away from the desired end result.

  • A3Kr0n

That damned Kevin Durant I hope he burns in hell.

  • Greg G.

Wasn’t Russell Westbrook’s knee injury punishment enough for Durant not condemning Collins to eternal torment?

  • TCC

The “just world” hypothesis strikes again.

  • Randay

A couple of days ago an extreme right wing Christian shot himself dead
in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. He was 78 and in his suicide note
he said one of his reasons was the “infamy” of the new French law passed
by the socialist parliament legalizing same sex marriage and adoption.
Is he the winner, or did he not pass the finish line? BTW, in response
the Russian parliament is going to pass a law forbidding French
homosexual couples from adopting Russian children.

Sorry, I earlier misposted this on another thread.

  • Randay

Why didn’t Gawd send the tornado through Washington D.C.? Besides a
homosexual on the basketball team, there are closeted gays in the
government and sin, er, I mean corruption is rampant as well. Gawd
could have selected some lobbyists’ homes in particular. Most of these are White, American Christians.

Another of my earlier misposts elsewhere.
