Christian Children’s Book Preaches Against Same-Sex Parents

God wants everyone to have one mommy and one daddy… according to a new children’s book that masks anti-gay preaching as wholesome literature.

God Made Dad & Mom, written by Amber Dee Parker and illustrated by Hannah Segura, is the story of a little boy named Michael who learns through prayer what real families are all about. Real families, apparently, can only consist of two different-sex parents, because that’s what God wants.

According to The Advocate:

“Michael prays for his classmate Jimmy and his two dads to learn “the truth” about how God made them after a trip to the zoo where he’s told all animal families “consist of a male, a female, and their offspring.”

What a great lesson! But don’t be fooled — Jimmy knows that God only feels this way because he loves Jimmy’s gay dads and wants to show them the truth. (The truth being that their homosexuality is a sin, obviously…)

An excerpt from ‘God Made Dad & Mom’

The book is endorsed by the anti-gay American Family Association, whose president Tim Wildmon has said that gays are vile and unnatural, that they brainwash children, and that they make him want to throw up.

In case you’re not cringing yet, watch the all-too-uncomfortable trailer for the book featuring its author:

It pains me to think parents are teaching their children this vitriol from such a young age. This doesn’t do anything except to ensure kids will be closed-minded and bigoted before even meeting any people who are different from them. And never mind that some of the kids reading this book will one day realize they themselves are gay and this certainly won’t help their self-esteem. But the author and the endorsers don’t care about any of that. Somehow, they’ve produced a children’s book that says there’s something wrong with a pair of kind and loving parents.

As usual, nothing good can come from this kind of evangelizing, even if it’s presented in the form of an interracial cartoon couple. Nice try, though.

Is there something here that should surprise us? Basically, any kid that grows up in a household that would offer her this book is fucked, anyway.

It is worth noting that the same authors and publisher of this book, 50 years ago, would have preached against interracial marriages. So at least these particular Christians have caught up to where the rest of us were long, long ago in that respect.

    • jdm8

Heather Has Two Mommies was copyrighted in 1989, I’m surprised it took them 24 years to make a “counterpoint” book, as it were.

      • C Peterson

I don’t keep up on Christian literature, but I imagine there are many books along this line out there, published since 1989. This is probably only the latest.

        • jdm8

You have a point, but I was in evangelical Christianity until a few years ago and haven’t heard of any, only repeated complaints of HHTM, nothing of rebuttal books of the type.

          I think someone found a 2006 book.

          • Anna

Yes, Does God Love Michael’s Two Daddies? is from 2006, but there are other anti-gay picture books out there. Another awful one is Alfie’s Home from 1993, which tells children that homosexuality is caused by sexual abuse!

WTF??? So, “mother’s love” consists of a baby apparently sucking on a breast, while a “father’s love” consists of a baby being held a little lower down to….??? Am I the only one who got some kind of weird incestuous pedophile vibe here? Maybe it’s just that Christians equate homosexuality with pedophilia so often, that I’m assuming that’s what they’re implying here.
What a tin-plated piece of shit this book is!

                • Anna

You’re not alone! That illustration is unfortunate. Or perhaps it’s deliberate, given the rest of the book.

                  Even creepier picture:

Okay, now I really am going to puke. That’s just outright slander. Someone should really point out to them that it’s religious folks like Catholic priests that are molesting little boys, not gay fathers.

                • Anna

Luckily, this book is way on the fringe. I don’t think many actual children are going to come across a copy. At least, I certainly hope not.

          • Alice

I think most of the Christian books like that just teach heterosexuality without mentioning homosexuality at all, because they don’t want their precious children to know such a thing exists.

      • Stev84

Why bother making a counter book when you can just get the original banned in schools? Refuting it would just draw attention to it.

        • http://itsmyworldcanthasnotyours.blogspot.com/ wmdkitty

Book-banning (and burning) are fucking blasphemy to book-lovers. (Though a ban would draw a LOT of attention to the book…)

The only good that will come of this, from this book and others like it, is that they will become the foundational catalyst for rational and critical thinking in a few select children. Atheists are born with a “Bull Shit Detection Gene.” Books like this trigger the function of that gene. It may take some time to see the full effect but never the less you can not stop the inevitable. ACCORDING TO RENOWNED GENETICISTS AND EVOLUTIONISTS The “Bull Shit Detection Gene” is becoming highly prevalent amongst youth across the globe.

    Edited for readability and humor.

I don’t really feel like it works that way. Religious education is specifically designed to be mind control.

      How soon they forget!

Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And, but for the interference with his arrangement, there would be no cause for such marriage. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix.

        I like this one:

“God Made Dad & Mom [& Step-Moms 1 through 4]” is worth it for the cover illustration alone: It reminds mixed-race tots that even if your father is black, the Lord wants you to be a blond, blue-eyed Caucasian.

Horrible, but not surprising in the slightest. This isn’t even the first book of its kind. There’s a previous title called Does God Love Michael’s Two Daddies? from 2006.

I wonder how little Michael would react if told that less than fifty years ago, his own mother and father, who appear to be depicted as belonging to different races, would have been subject to harassment and even legal prosecution.

    • Hat Stealer

BUT if you remember it was all those nice Christians who were paving the way for interracial unions. That’s how it happened, right?

      Right?

      • Miss_Beara

They would like you to think so.

    • Thackerie

But … but Little Michael doesn’t appear to be of mixed ancestry at all. Maybe he has two daddies after all … the black dude married to mommy and the anonymous white dude somewhere else who was the actual sperm donor.

  • Hat Stealer

I never cease to be amazed at how simultaneously patronizing, unthinking, and contradictory these people are. Please pray for God to intervene and correct Jimmies’s dads so as to save them from how God made them in the first place? How anyone can read that and not have their brain explode is beyond me.

Plus, there’s a rainbow on the front cover. A rainbow.

    • Anna

Plus, if God “corrects” Jimmy’s dads, what happens to poor little Jimmy? He’s now living in a broken home. I suppose they think divorce is good for kids as long as it involves two dads splitting up and re-marrying women.

      • Alice

Yeah, they see being gay as the worst possible fate and think that Jimmy will automatically “choose” to be gay because of growing up with two dads. So anything that can “fix” the situation (death, divorce, etc) is seen as a better option. So screwed up.

        • Anna

Well, the more “sophisticated” branches of the anti-gay movement have moved on from claiming that children of same-sex parents are more likely to be gay themselves, but there are still some homophobes beating that tired old drum.

However, these days they’re a bit more savvy. They’d be more likely to simply claim that two dads are bad role models, and that poor little Jimmy has less chance of growing up to be a well-adjusted heterosexual because he didn’t see a straight relationship “modeled” for him at home. Plus, he didn’t get the elusive benefits of complementarian parenting, which they are constantly talking about but can never explain without resorting to stereotypes.

          • Hat Stealer

You mean those ABSOLUTELY TRUE stereotypes that are NOT SEXIST WHATSOEVER?

            • Anna

Those are them! I’ve been asking for years for concrete examples, and they have never managed to provide any.

    • jdm8

I think there’s a movement to retake the rainbow symbol as a religious symbol. They see the rainbow as their symbol because of the flood story.

  • http://parkandbark.wordpress.com/ Houndentenor

If God wanted all children to have a mommy and a daddy then he could make sure that neither parent dies before the child is grown. That doesn’t happy. God must not want that all that much then. What a load of nonsense.

  • Gideon

“after a trip to the zoo where he’s told all animal families ‘consist of a male, a female, and their offspring.’ ”

But did the zoo have an aquarium section with clownfish, and therefore little Michael now realizes that changing gender is part of God’s natural plan?

    • C Peterson

And it doesn’t take too long in the primate section to see some serious male-on-male or female-on-female action.

Same-sex couples aren’t that unusual among some bird species. In some colonies they even make up a large percentage of the couples, getting together to hatch eggs more easily after the males left.

    • anniewhoo

My thought exactly. I have read a few articles (all based on the University of Oslo study) that state that up to 1,500 animal species exhibit homosexual behavior. A zoo seems like the very worst place to make an anti-gay point.

      • observer

Ah, but anti-gays have a backup plan: they transform their naturalistic fallacy into your strawman.
I.e. Using the zoo, for this example, they argue, rather subtly, that homosexuality is unnartual. But you have argued that homosexuality HAS been observed in animals, thus homosexuality is natural. So they counter argue with something like, “Well, animals have been observed to have eaten their young, are we to simulate THAT as well?”

A rather dickish example of moving the goalpost.

        • http://absurdlypointless.blogspot.com/ Tanner B James

christians won’t have to eat their young, we’ve got that task covered.

    • averydashwood

It’s reassuring to know that the ultimate example of moral behavior is what you see at the zoo.

  • Bobette

I guess there were no New Mexico Whiptail lizards at the zoo.

“The New Mexico whiptail lizard is a crossbreed of a western whiptail
which lives in the desert and the little striped whiptail that favours
grasslands. The lizard is a female-only species that reproduces by
producing an egg through parthenogenesis. Despite reproducing asexually,
and being an all female species, the whiptail still engages in mating
behavior with other females of its own species, giving rise to the
common nickname “lesbian lizards”. A common theory is that this behavior
stimulates ovulation, as those who do not “mate” do not lay eggs”

or maybe they were made by Satan?

  • hailey

I checked if this was in any of my local libraries and happily it hasn’t made its way yet. But there was an array of other equally nauseous Christian books and videos geared for kids and babies. How lame does Christianity have to be to depend on watered down dogma to train their little tykes into believing it’s a good religion?

I thought monogamy was the exception rather than the rule in nature. So somebody was “lion” to poor Michael. So presumably, unless they completely shelter Michael off from the rest of the world, Michael will find out on wikipedia in about two seconds that it was a lie and then will grow up to be a rocket scientist or something.

There is a great new teeshirt from evolvefish that shows a little boy holding hands with two men, one on either side. The caption reads: “Jesus had two dads.”

  • Beth

Well, I would like to thank the author of this book. I have not seen the video because my 3 year old is in the room. But knowing that this book is out there, I just snuggled my son on my lap and we had a small chat about all different kinds of families: ones with one mommy and one daddy, ones with lots of kids or no kids, ones with two mommies or two daddies, ones with step mommies and a daddy, or a step daddy and a mommy…The thing that makes a family is love, as long as the people love each other they are family. At this age he is fast (and very vocal!) about pointing out how people are different and it would be so easy to mold him into thinking that different is bad. As a parent I am so sad that people out there want clones, we all look the same, act the same, and think the same.

    • http://parkandbark.wordpress.com/ Houndentenor

Whenever I read about this, I’m reminded of my cousin who is a foster care provider. She takes care of teenage girls who have no parent fit to take care of them. Not one. Two moms or two dads? Those kids should be so lucky. Or even one good parent, gay or straight with any amount of pigmentation. These people live in a fantasy world where only some idealized version of the family will do. A lot of parents don’t have an ideal family and some don’t even have any family at all. What about them? But they have no time for compassion for those children. They are too busy worrying that someone might have some kind of family structure they don’t approve of. They need a better set of priorities. it’s too bad their church has warped them so badly they can’t see that.

    • Anna

There are also plenty of wonderful and inclusive books for young children that portray a variety of family arrangements. I’m fond of Todd Parr’s The Family Book. Someone’s made a video of it, too.

This author clearly has no grasp of reality and michael is starting out pretty badly. Either he is in a private christian school or he is at a public school that is just waiting for a law suit 0:45 in the video.

Obviously his friend must be prayed for i mean he is being raised by two dads that love him which is horrible. I mean he is not being abused, neglected, or ignored, but clearly having loving same-sex parents is horrible. Clearly the best thing would be to break his family apart in order to fulfill michael’s parents view of marriage.

why does his traditional family have a black dad and white mom? are they trying to say that they weren’t the ones responsible for loving v virginia.

  • A3Kr0n

She made a children’s book against homosexuality, and her example is a mixed race couple with a black man and a white woman. It doesn’t look like dad is the boy’s biological father, either. How many years ago would THAT have been taboo in the church? What group is this woman targeting with this book? Can anybody get their head stuck further up their bible than this woman? So many questions, so few answers.

    • Anna

I have no doubt that the use of an interracial couple was deliberate. Anti-gay detractors hate when people point out the parallels between their arguments and the identical anti-miscegenation arguments from the 1960s.

A lot of the anti-gay marriage campaigns also use interracial couples as their examples of “traditional” marriage, even though such an arrangement would have sent good Southern Christians into a frenzy just one generation ago.

      • A3Kr0n

I never knew it was common for them to use interracial couples like that.

      • http://gamesgirlsgods.blogspot.com/ Feminerd

Do all the multiracial couples in this sort of propaganda have blond, blue-eyed kiddies? I’m pretty sure that’s not actually likely to happen …

        • Anna

The blond hair is a bit weird, although the dad in the book doesn’t look African American. I think the illustrator was going for “vaguely ethnic,” which might result in a child with lighter hair and complexion. I can’t see the illustrations closely enough to tell the color of the eyes.

          • http://squeakysoapbox.com/ Rich Wilson

You certainly can have two brown eyed parents give birth to a blue eyed baby. Less common, but my son is an example :-)

I went to the website she mentions in the video to see if there were any clearer pictures- and I couldn’t find the book anywhere.

            • Anna

That’s true. I live in an area with a lot of Asian/white interracial families, and you often see biracial children with light brown hair and even blue eyes. I even knew a half-Japanese boy who was blond. It’s also common if one parent is Hispanic, since of course most people from Latin America have ancestors from Europe as well.

  • Vukota Pecota

The one great thing about this is that when the inevitable happens and gay marriage is accepted everywhere, Christians can’t revise history and claim they were fighting on the right side. Books like this will be all the evidence we need to show that they’re lying.

  • http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/ Kevin_Of_Bangor

One of my ex-wife’s sisters is gay but she was married at one time and had a son. To long of a back story to tell but her husband died from HIV which he contracted from a blood transfusion in the 80′s when blood was not screened for HIV.

This young man who is now 23 and was raised by two gay women. He grew up in a very healthy and happy home and he is 100% straight. My daughter has known her two gay Aunts all her life and she adores them. She has spent many nights over at their house, she has spent time snuggled between them on the couch as they watch a movie and she likes boys.

Granted she does have a girl crush on Jennifer Lawrence and she said she would be a lesbian for a night with her but that has nothing to do with her being raised around her two gay Aunt’s. It has to do with me being honest with her and letting her know it is ok to find the opposite sex attractive.

I truly get pissed off when I hear or read stories that say two men or two women cannot raise a healthy and happy child because I’ve seen it done. My daughters two Aunt’s are two of the nicest people on this planet and my daughter adores both of them dearly.

    I’ll end my rant now.

    • Anna

What irks me is that people like this often pretend to be genuinely concerned about children with same-sex parents, but it’s a ruse. They don’t care about us. They have no interest in our welfare. They just want to use us as pawns in their political movement. They’ve formed a conclusion that our families are bad and wrong, and everything they do follows from that. I’d be somewhat less annoyed if they weren’t so horribly disingenuous about it all.

      • http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/ Kevin_Of_Bangor

I was very religious when I started dating my wife and she knew it. I was the bible thumping born again Christian. We even went to a Harvest Crusade when we where dating and I still remember when she told me her sister was gay and that she had HIV.

She was very nervous because she thought I was going to freak out, which I did not. I was raised in a very religious home but my mother was a very liberal Christian and I was not raised to judge others.

Why people think two men or two women cannot raise a child is beyond me, it truly is. My parents divorced when I was 7 years old because my father was a drunk and he still is to this day. I had serious mental issues during my teenage years because of him. I would gladly have taken two mothers or two fathers over a father that was never there.

Yes, not all same sex couples are the best in the world. I’m sure there are plenty that are complete screw ups but for every same sex couple you can fine that has issues I can fine plenty more straight couples that have the same issue.

I think most normal people realize that. Society has come a long way, especially in the past 20 years. No one’s attacking two-mom or two-dad families anymore except the religious extremists.

I remember when Heather Has Two Mommies and Daddy’s Roommate first came out, there was a firestorm of controversy. Now you have much of middle America watching Modern Family, which features two dads with a young daughter. It’s more common to see LGBT families casually included in children’s picture books (like the popular Everywhere Babies) and no one really bats an eye.

It’s the organized anti-gay movement that’s losing the battle, and, boy, are they ever upset about it! They resort to writing propaganda like this because they know they’re on the losing side, and that younger evangelicals don’t agree with stigmatizing their gay friends and family members.

There was a teacher who married her partner prior to prop 8, and her class attended the wedding as a field trip. All with parental notification and permission of course. During the prop 8 campaign, one if the ‘pro’ orgs used a picture from a newscast of one of the girls at that wedding in their campaign.

So here was a kid from a family that supported marriage equality, with her face plastered large and loud all over a state wide campaign against marriage equality.

I really wish I’d kept print copy of that ad.

My cousin Jennifer came out 15 years ago. She has now married her long-term partner and they’ve raised two happy, well-adjusted teenage daughters. Even my fundie parents can’t find any real fault with Jenny and Linda’s family.

That sounds almost exactly like a family I know. Except that the original two-mom couple eventually split up, and both have remarried. And both members of the original couple still consider him their son, so now this young man has three moms and a dad. And he’s great, he’s now married (to a girl) and seems totally well adjusted. How is all of this not an improvement on being raised by a struggling single parent?

I see they went with the non-traditional construction “Dad and Mom” rather than the customary “Mom and Dad.” Godless hippies trying to change things all the time!

In their world view, men always come first.

Lying is okay when you’re standing up against Teh Evul Homogeyz. Teh Gey makes baby Jesus cry, after all!

Don’t forget all the kittens that are killed.

      *sarcasm alert*
Oh yeah, the mere mention of sticking it to Jesus (hahah get it?) makes me rub my vaseline covered hands in fiendish glee!

  • Timmah

I can see mom’s ankles on the cover. While still mad at teh gayz, god is clearly OK with mom being a showboating whore.

    • Anna

Looks like she’s got some cleavage going on, too. That belt is very defrauding!

Dad is showing off his elbows, I mean really how damn offensive can this book get to the Jahoba’s Witlessnesses.

  • ShoeUnited

It’s gotta be better than that “I’ll Love You Forever” book they had us read back in Catholic school 25+ years ago.

That shit was downright creepy. With that mom in her 80s driving all the way to her 50 year old son’s house, creeping into the window, and rocking him to sleep.

    • http://itsmyworldcanthasnotyours.blogspot.com/ wmdkitty

Oh gods, that was the creepiest. thing. evar.

      Hello, Norman Bates….

A former boss, who is a nice guy but kinda weird, once decided to have “storytime” and read us that book. It was extra creepy coming from him.

  • stojadinovicp

“This is a GREAT book…” – says the author of the book…

    seems legit…

  • griffox

Gosh, that song sounds an awful lot like Coldplay’s Viva la Vida. It seems like an odd choice.

  • RobertoTheChi

And OF COURSE the comments are disabled on YouTube…

  • Pawel Samson

Pretty telling that it’s “Dad & Mom” in the title, not “Mom & Dad” like literally the whole whole world says it.

  • SeekerLancer

I like that the dad is kind of brown so they can pretend to be all inclusive while they’re being exclusive.

  • Gus Snarp

You got hate on my scientific ignorance!

Well you got your scientific ignorance all over my hate!

  • David

I’m really curious as to why single parents aren’t considered immoral. I mean god clearly made us for one dad and one mom.
