Five Atheism-Related Stories That Made Me Smile This Week

The video below, part of The Atheist Voice series, discusses five stories from the past week that made me smile:

We’d love to hear your thoughts on the project — more videos will be posted soon — and we’d also appreciate your suggestions as to which questions we ought to tackle next!

About Hemant Mehta

Heard Foster say in an interview that he doesn’t believe in religion. He was asked by Dan Lebartard on ESPN to tell the viewers something they do not know about him. I thought it took a lot of courage for him to say that. I bet his agent wasn’t happy. This took place about a year ago.

      Doesn’t believe in religion?

I very much believe in religion. It’s actually difficult to look around and not see signs of religion. Churches! Churches everywhere!

Religion is real, and it’s destructive.

Before I had the courage to go ” the full monty”, I used to say the same thing; using platitudes like “I’m spiritual NOT religious”. It took a long time to fully realize that that statement is itself a kind of religious style dogma. Spirituality is simply religion without the rules. So I agree that someone saying that they “don’t believe in religion” isn’t really much of an admission at all as a very large portion of Americans describe themselves this way without doing away with their fairy tale like belief systems.

LOL that is like saying I’m not an atheist, I just don’t believe.

What brightened my week was finding the following in a story by L. Sprague de Camp written in 1949.
Context: the character is trying to decide upon a disguise identity.
“A religious pilgrim. However, that might get you into religious arguments. What is your church?”
    “Reformed Atheist.”

Don’t forget that any UU pastor will be glad to perform a wedding ceremony.

I just saw this story on CNN… http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2013/09/14/hey-atheists-lets-make-a-deal/?hpt=hp_c4

It’s from a Christian saying “We won’t label all atheists with that thing Dawkins said if you don’t equate all Christians with the next stupid thing Pat Robertson says.” It also makes a references to the things the Pope has been saying about atheists recently.

It makes me think… 10 years ago we would have never seen these sort of efforts to reach out to atheists…they are feeling threatened…we have them on the run…and they know it.

To equate Richard Dawkins with Pat Robertson does Dawkins a huge disservice.
