Richard Dawkins Discusses An Appetite for Wonder

Richard Dawkins is in the middle of his book tour for An Appetite for Wonder and he’ll be appearing at Northwestern University tonight. Jerry Coyne will be interviewing Dawkins on stage and I’ll be introducing the two as well as moderating the Q&A afterwards (which you *know* is going to be the craziest part of the night).

If you’re curious what the discussions are like, here’s a nice example from the Royal Institution of Great Britain — Adam Rutherford, a science broadcaster, was the host for the evening:

I don’t know if you have the authority to sneak in any reader questions but if the opportunity arises…

Pope Benedict just called the Selfish Gene a work of “science fiction.”

I guess I’m just wondering if he’s surprised at all that Ratzinger reads his books.

Is he still called “Pope” Benedict, or “the Benedict formerly known as Pope”?

      • Rationalist1

“His Holiness Benedict XVI, Pope-Emeritus” or HHBXVIPE for short.

I am too. It’s been translated into 31 languages, but Latin isn’t one of them.

For the curious, Google translate version of Benny’s remarks.

From that, I suspect “fantascienza” has some nuances in Italian which are not quite the same as those in the American English phrase “science fiction”.

Oh, I don’t particularly care what Ratzinger thinks about the Selfish Gene. I’m just surprised that he reads Dawkins. I wonder if he read God Delusion?

No, the only thing I care about Ratzinger is that he’s an international criminal being harbored by a sovereign state which claims moral authority over a billion people. That’s some terrifying shit right there.

I like my wonder with a crunchy texture, and a mix of sweet and savory.

47:40-50:45 Very interesting information on the “immortal” gene and the coded information within can be traced back millions of years.
