Pat Robertson: When Your Son Comes Out as Gay, Ask If He’s Been Molested

Conservative pundit Pat Robertson this week had shocking words for a mother who wrote to him distressed because her 16-year-old son had just come out as gay. First reported by Right Wing Watch, on an episode of “The 700 Club,” Robertson suggested that the parent of a gay son should try to find out if her child was gay due to molestation.

Robertson answers the woman’s question by essentially suggesting that her son is gay because he was sexually abused, one of the most common — and most harmful — myths perpetuated about LGBT youth by anti-gay religious extremists.

“Is there a biological thing going on or has he been influenced — has a coach molested him?” Robertson asked the viewer. Of the LGBT youth community as a whole, he noted: “They don’t know what they’re doing, they’re teenagers.”

He then advises the woman to try to understand what her son was going through and to “talk to him and counsel him,” presumably until he’s “fixed” and no longer thinks he’s gay.

Robertson’s anti-gay antics are not new, of course. He was named “Bigot of the Year” last week in London at the Stonewall Awards, a 500-person ceremony honoring those who have supported Britain’s LGBT community. The Daily Mail explains:

US TV evangelist Pat Robertson was named Bigot of the Year — the award reserved for an individual who has gratuitously caused hurt and offence to gay people around the world. Robertson hit headlines in August by saying that gay men viciously spread HIV when shaking hands by using ‘special rings’.

And the Huffington Post adds:

In addition, Robertson has previously claimed that LGBT nondiscrimination ordinances will put Christians in jail, and stated that gays are just straight people who have “forsaken God.”

Thanks for the great advice, Pat! I’m not sure why this man is still allowed on television, but I’m pretty sure we need to amp up the number of awards ceremonies that point out what a terrible person he is.

Then lets create an appropriate award and announce his winning ways to the media.

  • Kevin_Of_Bangor

Silly me. I forgot how I was once a teenage boy and didn’t care who I stuck my dick in or who might have stuck their dick in me.

  • WallofSleep

The sad thing is, this teen’s problems are gonna get worse if the mom spends months badgering the kid to give up the molester because she just knows that’s the only way her kid could be gay.

  • mandas

Is there a reason why anyone cares what Pat Robertson thinks or says?

  • James Lindsay

It’s good news that we’re still shocked by the kind of crap people like Pat Robertson say.

  • Kevin_Of_Bangor

Yes, there is. Millions of people follow his advice.

  • closetatheist

This man probably feels pride in being seen as the “bigot of the year” by so many people. According to Christian logic if people criticize you that means you’re successfully completing “God’s work.”

  • Houndentenor

Gay, never molested. Anyone else care to weigh in?

  • cyb pauli

Ask Pat if he gives a damn about the thousands of heterosexual girls who have been molested by heterosexual Christian men.

  • Anna

I’ve always found this molestation stereotype confusing. For one thing, they believe being molested by a man will make a boy gay, but they also claim that being molested by a man will turn a girl into a lesbian. Which is it? It doesn’t make the slightest bit of sense to think that molestation turns one sex on and the other sex off.

  • LesterBallard

    I so loathe these people.

  • LesterBallard

Yeah, this woman is as fucked up as Robertson, seeing as how she asked him for advice.

  • Pitabred

Why do you hate god? No, wait… it was the Gay Agenda(tm) that brainwashed you! No, wait… vegetarians! They did this horrible thing to you!

  • Kevin_Of_Bangor

You just didn’t know you where being molested.

  • Richard Wade

Pat Robertson is the Stromboli of stupidity and ignorance. The volcano has continuously erupted every day for at least 2,700 years. The only way Robertson can exhale is by saying idiotic and harmful things.

  • C Peterson

Well, the reality is that the kid has been molested. And so have his parents. The very fact that he needs to “come out”, the very fact that this whole thing is traumatic is proof of the molestation of them, and of our entire culture by the likes of Pat Roberson, and the corrupt belief system he hawks.

  • Joshua Lee Johansson Johnson

The 16-year-old will be emotionally and psychologically molested by his mother, all thanks to Dickhead Robertson

  • compl3x

No doubt a repressed memory which has manifested itself as homosexuality. You need a quack to perform age regression techniques on you so you can accuse someone of molesting you.

“Robertson hit headlines in August by saying that gay men viciously spread HIV when shaking hands by using ‘special rings’.”

Special rings? I thought gays weren’t allowed to exchange rings?

  • diogeneslamp0

If your son comes out as Christian, you should immediately ask if he was molested.

D’ya think that made Pat what he is?

  • Robster

Didn’t the old Pat end his “advice” with the words “be understanding” after offering the writer just the stuff she needs to have no idea?

  • Todd Heath

Gay, never molested. When I was 14 I prayed my youth pastor would molest me. Does that count?

  • Todd Heath

It was those atheist! Wait…..I’m a atheist. IT WAS ME!

  • Richard Wade

Of the LGBT youth community as a whole, he noted: “They don’t know what they’re doing, they’re teenagers.”

I wonder if Pat would say any of these similar statements about young people:
Of the Christian youth community as a whole, they don’t know what they’re doing, they’re teenagers.
Of the youth community entering college as a whole, they don’t know what they’re doing, they’re teenagers.
Of the youth community that is rejecting Christianity as a whole, they don’t know that they’re doing, they’re teenagers.

Keep it up Pat, you’re doing an excellent job of alienating young people with your blanket dismissals. I imagine the average age of your viewing audience is getting older even faster than you, because you’re driving young people away.

  • trj

Their thinking is that molestation will traumatize you and influence your sexuality, which in itself is not an unreasonable assumption. The error lies in the next step where they assume that if you can’t have a “normal” sex life then you must be gay. Because gays are broken.

  • Anna

But they claim that such trauma leads to either being turned on by the abuser’s sex, or turned off by the abuser’s sex, and that the subsequent attraction (or lack thereof) depends on if the victim is a boy or a girl. It’s not consistent at all. They should pick one or the other, not try to have it both ways.

  • LizzyJessie

Which rings? The kind that goes on a finger?

Hopefully, Pat will join his grifter bigot buddy Jerry Falwell in the great beyond soon and leave us in peace. But you never can tell as the grandaddy of religious grifters, Billy Graham is still breathing, further proof the good die young

  • Intelligent Donkey

Of course not. It’s the “normal”, god-prescribed way to have sex, so it can’t possibly be a problem.

  • Baby_Raptor

Fuck both of these people with a rusty spork. That’s on fire.

I am so sick of the way the Religious Right assumes and implies the worst possible things about anyone who doesn’t toe their line.

  • Henk Um

If stupidity would equal money this guy would be LOADED. Oh wait he is…..

  • Rin68nyr

I nearly fell over when I read that he said “gay men viciously spread HIV when shaking hands by using ‘special rings’.” I’m just speechless!

  • Ubi Dubium

That was my reaction to his comments too. If they say that they are LGBT “They don’t know what they’re doing, they’re teenagers”, but if they say they want to devote their lives to Jesus, then suddenly they are mature enough to completely know what they are doing. Why does anyone listen to this guy?

  • Jasper

It gets me, the very notion that if someone comes out as gay, that some kind of action must be taken… as opposed to just saying “Oh”, and moving on with life.

  • evodevo

Xtians always want to have it both ways (no pun intended) because they hate reality. Facts are merely an inconvenience in their world.

  • evodevo

My fundie co-workers follow his every word.

  • evodevo

Maybe ole Pat is on to something here – a lot of molesting goes on at those Xtian youth organizations and summer camps – you just can’t trust those youth counselors. I’d say that was the first place I would look !! Interesting that the first person he thought of was a COACH (I’m thinking of all the thousands of fundie coaches out there pushing Jeezus and flagpoles and “taking a knee”). Hmmmm …

  • Dani Bonobo

Bisexual here. Never molested. Or does that mean I was halfway molested? I can never get these things straight (pun intended).

  • Dan Robinson

I’m bi too and never was molested. Still hoping though…

  • indorri

    Gay, never molested.

  • CultOfReason

The fact that this clueless Mom trusts Robertson with advice does not bode well for the kid.

  • CultOfReason

It was the girls’ faults. Must have been the way they were dressed.

  • tubi11

I could even see, under incessant pressure from the mom, an innocent person being falsely accused. Like under torture, when the victim says anything to make it stop, I could see the son giving up the soccer coach or camp counselor just to get mom to back off.

    Way to go, Pat!

Is there any evidence to support the claim that molestation will lead to homosexuality? This claim is made SO OFTEN that I would think the people making it would have some research to back them up? Or are they just making this claim with zero evidence? Because either way it’s harmful, but much moreso if there is absolutely zero proven correlation.

  • Guest

Based on *my* research, there is no correlation. But I am by no means a professional.

  • islandbrewer

Actually, I think there may be something to it in the same self-reporting correlation between breast cancer and abortion – i.e. people who find the courage to come out and publicly state they’re gay or lesbian, are also more likely to report past abuse. It gives the illusion that gays and lesbians are “more often abused as children” to lazy observers (e.g. Pat Robertson).

Or they’re plain making shit up (these are not mutually exclusive).

  • guest

This guy should be locked up, sedated and held for observation….until he croaks. I’d call him a sack of $hit, but that would be offensive to sacks of $hit everywhere.

  • Oswald Carnes

    Me, too.

  • Matt D

Same, and I was quite young when I realized I was gay, yet no incidents of molestation ever. Besides, by his logic, being molested by a woman is the answer for making someone straight.

The man is losing his grip on reality (not like that is far off the mark for his religion) but he’ll be another Harold Camping if he keeps it up.

  • Elly

Curse those vegetarians! First they ruined my steak dinner by making me feel bad about the cow and now they’re ruining our children!

  • TheG

I was thinking that if someone comes out as a Christian, you should ask them if they were born an asshole or if someone made them an asshole.

  • TheG

It is like that case of a girl who was raped in Nebraska and wanted an abortion. The courts decided she was too young and immature to understand the decision to have an abortion. But mature enough to raise a child? You betcha!

  • TheG

Yes, but who made the sack for him?

  • James Allison

People used to believe that the world was flat, because the Bible taught that it was. When scientific evidence won out, the Bible was suddenly in agreement. Same with the homosexual issue. It’s wrong because the Bible says it’s wrong. But even today some theologians are backing down on that assumption. Will the Bible once again be reinterpreted because of scientific evidence?

  • baal

Yeah, I filed that one under “outcome driven legal decision”. It’s not rational and that decision didn’t given a legal rationale that you could use in forward looking arguments.

  • Stephanie Austin

You owe me a new monitor! :-)

  • Aspieguy

When your son comes out as a homophobic TV preacher, ask him if he has been lobotomized.

  • Aspieguy

Oh, Pat, Pat, Pat. Alzheimer’s is a painful thing to watch.

  • Captain Cassidy

You have a talent for making lemons into limoncello, Richard.

  • Captain Cassidy

Straight as a ruler, molested (by a man). Clearly I’m doing something terribly wrong.
