San Francisco Church Douses Homeless People with Water to Keep Them Off the Property

In case you needed more reasons to dislike the Catholic Church, Saint Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco has figured out a way to clear away all the homeless people who rest on their property: They douse them with water:

KCBS has learned that Saint Mary’s Cathedral… has installed a watering system to keep the homeless from sleeping in the cathedral’s doorways.

But there are no signs warning the homeless about what happens in these doorways, at various times, all through the night. Water pours from a hole in the ceiling, about 30 feet above, drenching the alcove and anyone in it.

The shower ran for about 75 seconds, every 30 to 60 minutes while we were there, starting before sunset, simultaneously in all four doorways. KCBS witnessed it soak homeless people, and their belongings.

KCBS has also learned from a review of city permit records that the system was installed illegally, and may violate water use regulations.

I could understand if the church just didn’t want homeless people on their property for any number of reasons, but there are more humane ways of handling that. Ruining the little property the homeless have and making their day that much worse just shows you how these Catholics’ self-proclaimed compassion actually plays out. This is how they deal with people who thought they might get some help within the Church walls…

I guess this is what Jesus wanted.

***Update***: A violation notice from the city’s Department of Building Inspection means the Archdiocese has 15 days to remove the Hose-the-Homeless system.
