Bill to Make the Holy Bible Tennessee’s Official State Book Passes Through Committee on 2-1 Vote

Following the lead of Republicans in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama, Tennessee State Rep. Jerry Sexton (below) filed a bill earlier this year to make the Holy Bible the official state book:

House Bill 615 has now advanced through the State Government Subcommittee on a 2-1 vote on Wednesday:

Rep. Bill Sanderson, the subcommittee’s chairman, said a formal legal opinion has been requested from Attorney General Herbert Slatery. But Sanderson said preliminary word is that the state’s top attorney said the measure could be constitutionally suspect.

Of all the books any state should be exalting, a specific group’s religious text ought to be pretty low on the list. Why not a math textbook or a work of classic literature? There are so many authors with connections to the state — Alex Haley, Robert Penn Warren, Tennessee Williams — and it’s appalling their works weren’t considered.

If you live in the state, please contact your elected officials and ask them to reject this unnecessarily divisive bill.

And, if you want to do something ineffective but entertaining, there’s a poll on the news station’s website worth crashing:

As I write this, Yes and No are dead even.
