Tony Perkins Forgot That He Supports Impeaching Supreme Court Justices if They Vote for Marriage Equality

On Sunday’s Face the Nation, host Bob Schieffer asked anti-gay-rights leader Tony Perkins whether he ever said Supreme Court justices who rule in favor of marriage equality should be impeached (at the 3:33 mark).

Perkins denied every saying such a thing.

Schieffer: Did you really say that justices who come down on the side of gays on this should be impeached?

Perkins: No, I didn’t say that.

Schieffer: Because there are reports to that effect.

Perkins: No, I didn’t say that.

Schieffer: What did you say?

Perkins: Well… I didn’t say anything about impeachment of the judges. What I said [was] that they’re not the final say on this issue.

Maybe Perkins doesn’t understand that when he makes public comments, there’s a record of his statements. Or maybe his version of the Commandments doesn’t include the one about lying.

Because on a radio show just last week, Perkins had this exchange with host Jan Mickelson:

Mickelson: [The political class has] been playing that scam on us [pro-lifers] for the last generation or two, since ’73 [with Roe v. Wade]. Instead of doing what you implied could be done, that is, remove [the Supreme Court’s] jurisdiction… Congress could say “that was a ridiculous decision. We’re nullifying it and removing your jurisdiction. If you try it again, we’ll impeach your sorry keisters.”

Perkins: I don’t disagree with you. I think you’re absolutely right.

So, you see? Perkins didn’t say the justices should be impeached for voting in support of marriage equality. He just completely agreed with another guy who said the exact same thing.

Good try, Bob Schieffer. Good try.
