Texas Senate Passes Bill Removing Abortion Coverage from Health Insurance Plans, Even for Rape Victims

Texas Republicans still don’t give a shit about women:

The Texas Senate voted Tuesday to eliminate insurance coverage for abortion through private insurance plans and plans purchased through the federal health care exchange.

Sen. Larry Taylor (above) sponsored SB 575 because he doesn’t want anyone to have to pay for abortion coverage if they don’t want to:

Women can still get abortions, Taylor said “they’ll just have to come up with another means to pay for it other than having all the people across the state of Texas who buy insurance being forced to pay for something they don’t believe in or agree with.”

Because none of us should ever have to pay for things we disagree with. That’s how you run a democracy. (Keep in mind that the same insurance plans cover Viagra, so everyone has to pay for boner pills whether or not they like it.)

What’s even more appalling is that the insurance prohibition would also apply to women who were raped or whose fetuses have no chance of survival. They would have to either pay for an abortion using supplemental insurance or cover it out-of-pocket.

It’s just an all-around disaster, and it’s a bill that stands a good chance of becoming law. The Texas House passed a similar bill earlier this year.

To quote one online commenter: “That noise you hear isn’t a fetal heartbeat — it’s the sound of a Bible being thumped.”
