After Lesbians Buy Engagement Rings from Jewelry Store, Co-Owner Puts Up Sign Opposing Marriage Equality

***Update***: The store co-owner has given back the couple’s money so they may purchase their rings elsewhere.

Nicole White and Pam Renouf recently purchased engagement rings at Today’s Jewellers in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. They had no issues, gave their size specifications, made a down payment, and expected to pick up the rings very soon.

They even made a recommendation to a friend of theirs. When he went in to get a ring for his girlfriend, he noticed this sign in the store:

The sanctity of marriage is under attack. Let’s keep marriage between a man and a woman.

What the hell? White and Renouf said they went to the store together and the owners knew they were lesbians. But if that’s how the owners feel, they really don’t want to give them any business, and I don’t blame them.

It may be too late, though:

When asked if he would offer a refund to the couple, [co-owner Esau] Jardon said he won’t be bullied into apologizing for his beliefs or to work for free.

He said the finished rings are ready to be picked up; White and Renouf just have to pay the balance.

Seems like the proper way to handle this would be for White and Renouf to pay for their rings and then spread the word that this place doesn’t deserve your business. The backlash may already be happening.

The Yelp reviews are already in the toilet.

And another Today’s Jewellers about an hour away in Bay Roberts issued an apology on their Facebook page, making clear that they have nothing to do with the bigots over at Mount Pearl:

We find it necessary to address the fact that we are NOT affiliated with any other locations, including that of Mount Pearl. We offer our deepest apologies to any and all those affected by the sign displayed, and would like the public and our customers to know that we have so much appreciation and respect for ALL people, and welcome all to come to Today’s Jewellers here at Bay Roberts.

Maybe it’s time for Jardon to put up another sign, renaming the store Yesterday’s Jewellers.

What sort of messed-up store puts up a sign in the store that basically says they want nothing to do with certain customers? He may have the right to put up whatever sign he wants, but it’s a stupid business decision.
