Christian Pastor’s Wife: Josh Duggar Was Just “Playing Doctor,” So Stop Making a Big Deal About Him

Finally, we know the real reason Josh Duggar molested five little girls. And a Christian pastor’s wife said it so you *know* it’s accurate.

The teenage Duggar was simply “playing doctor.”

Not Josh Duggar
Not Josh Duggar

That’s what Carrie Hurd (under her pastor-husband’s Facebook profile) said to my Patheos colleague Vyckie Garrison:

When I was a kid, it was often called “playing doctor”, there were just as many girls initiating this kind of behavior as boys. Most of those never went on to perp horrible things. The Duggers, who I have never watched — am not a fan, did it properly and the 14 year old boy should probably be left alone to live a good life, just like girls who do the same thing. You troll the news for any little Christian misbehavior. Get a life! Go to Iraq and fight ISIS if you are seriously worried about women being treated well by men and society.

My understanding of how kids play doctor is that two children explore each other’s bodies out of curiosity (even if that means touching each other’s genitals).

It doesn’t happen when one person can’t give consent because she’s sleeping.

Or when there’s a huge age difference between the two people.

Or when the perpetrator is getting off from the groping.

I’m not sure if this is the sort of fucked-up thinking that comes from abstinence-only sex education, or if Hurd is just that ignorant of why Josh Duggar’s actions were criminally wrong.

Carrie Hurd is a quiverfull parent (much like Garrison used to be) with 11 kids. And it’s horrifying that she thinks if her little ones get molested, it might just be part of a fun little game.

She offered further comment at the Daily Mail Online:

On Sunday night, Mrs Hurd told Daily Mail Online: ‘I did a really bad job in my frustration and Vickie did a great job of twisting it. Or maybe we just just have different views of the world. It was my understanding from the reports that the police were involved and all had received counseling.

‘I like to think the best of people, and if a 14-year-old has changed and is living a lawful life after a crime, he should be able to live his adult life in peace. I like to believe rehabilitation is possible.’

She added: ‘If he hasn’t, he should go to jail.’

Vyckie didn’t “twist” anything; she only amplified it. Hurd’s words speak for themselves.

Hurd’s understanding of the situation is also full of holes. The police didn’t get involved until a year after the molesting began. Even then, the officer simply gave Josh Duggar a stern talking-to. The counseling Josh Duggar received was done by a person who wasn’t trained in the field — and the only punishment he faced was doing some manual labor.

In other words, we have no idea if this guy has changed. He sure as hell didn’t pay for his crimes, even as a minor. And his sisters (and their friend) haven’t seen any semblance of justice.

We know this. That’s why we’re speaking out about it. For someone completely ignorant of the story to tell a mother who really does get it why she’s out of line… well, that’s just the sort of holier-than-thou attitude we’ve come to expect from certain families in Christian leadership.
