Catholic Priest: Caitlyn Jenner is Just a “Man Dressed Up as a Whore”

I love writing for Patheos, but one of the downsides to the platform is that we share a network with certain religious writers who spew their own brand of bigotry.

On the other hand, there’s also nothing stopping me from calling them out on their bullshit…

Catholic priest Fr. Dwight Longenecker has a hateful reaction to the new Vanity Fair cover featuring Caitlyn Jenner:

It has been difficult not to have one’s nose pushed into a particular image this week.

It is that of a former Olympic athlete dolled up as a woman on the cover of the appropriately named Vanity Fair.

Here’s a guy who is on TV and is caught up in a huge publicity machine to sell himself and now to sell his sexual confusion and medical and cosmetic transformation into a female. When I see that Vanity Fair cover I don’t see an attractive woman.

I see a man dressed up as a whore… which of course is just what you would expect to find in the original Vanity Fair where every human delight is up for sale.

First of all, he chose to stare at the magazine cover. The world didn’t force it upon him.

We’ve come to expect this sort of bigotry from religious leaders. They demean people like Jenner by refusing to acknowledge her identity. That’s what happens when faith-based hatred clouds basic human decency.

It’s almost funny that Longenecker has to add that she’s not attractive, an opinion that will be useful to everyone getting their beauty tips from the Catholic Church… It’s as if Longenecker couldn’t admit that picture is gorgeous because people would think he’s gay… or straight… or, dammit, he’s so confused! Let’s just go with ugly!

And, of course, his comments are closed because he’s too much of a coward to deal with dissenting opinions on his own page.

Like I said, I don’t mind sharing this platform with people with whom I disagree. (Hell, that happens pretty frequently with the other atheist bloggers.)

But let me apologize to readers who see this intolerance masquerading as “the love of God” on the site I write for. I hate it as much as you do and I’m embarrassed to share Internet space with this guy.
