Missouri County Officials Will Fly Flags at Half-Staff to Mourn the Marriage Equality Ruling

Usually, when local governments fly flags at half-staff, it’s because someone notable died, like a President or Governor, or because there was some awful tragedy in the community.

None of those explain why the three Christian commissioners in Dent County, Missouri decided to lower the flags at the local Courthouse and Judicial Building for the next twelve months:

The Dent County Commission voted unanimously Monday to observe one year of “mourning” over the Supreme Court’s June 26 decision that gay couples have the constitutional right to marriage.

The observance will come in the form of lowering the flags at the Dent County Courthouse and Judicial Building to below half-staff on the 26th day of the month from July 2015 to June 2016.

Ah, yes. They’re mourning the end of “traditional” marriage. So tragic, this concept of tolerance and inclusivity…

Maybe there’s some joy in the fact that gay couples can now pass that lowered flag — call it a mark of surrender in this case — as they go in to get their wedding licenses.

Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles filed a letter into the record ahead of the vote staking his opposition to “the U.S. high court’s [sic] stamp of approval of what God speaks of as an abomination.”

Skiles also wrote that “all who see these flags at this lowered position be reminded of this despicable Supreme Court travesty” as reason enough to approve the plan.

To be clear, this isn’t something illegal.

It’s just a sign that these Commissioners are assholes.

By the way, I would assume the flags have never been lowered on account of straight couples getting a divorce.

***Update***: There’s already a Change.org petition to put the flags back up at the proper height.
