Vote to Remove “Jesus Welcomes You to Hawkins” Sign in Texas Delayed Following Mayor’s Concerns

Remember the 18-foot-wide sign welcoming visitors to the city of Hawkins, Texas?

Mayor Will Rogers had defended the Jesus-tastic sign even after receiving a letter of complaint from the Freedom From Religion Foundation. At one point, he said it wasn’t religious at all. He later said the sign should stay because Jesus was like Superman — and if the FFRF didn’t want a fictional being (in their opinion) welcoming people to Hawkins, then they would oppose Superman, too. So there.

In any case, the city council was supposed to decide the fate of that sign last night, but they postponed the vote:

Hawkins mayor Will Rogers said before the meeting on Monday that he hoped that the council would wait to make a decision. He said there are still unanswered questions about whether the tax records are accurate about who owns the property where the sign stands.

If the sign is on private property, this wouldn’t be an issue. But Rogers has already shown that he’ll use any excuse to keep the sign in place.

There’s no evidence that the tax records are inaccurate. He’s just trying to prolong the inevitable. And the city council is willing to play his game.
