Donald Trump: I Don’t Know If I’ll Campaign for Atheist Votes Since They “Might Not Like Me”

We know Donald Trump calls himself religious (“I go to church”) and is trying to win over the GOP’s conservative base, even if he’s horrible at speaking Christian-ese.

Given his attempts to reach out to religious voters, Trump was asked at a recent campaign stop in Iowa whether he would also try to get the votes of atheists:

Questioner: [Inaudible] religious, do you want the atheist vote, too?

Trump: I don’t know about the atheist vote. They might not like me. I’m not so sure.

Well, I’ll be damned. Trump finally said something I agree with! (Though he may have been more accurate saying “Nobody likes me”…)

If Trump gets the GOP nomination, he may have to rethink his position. 7% of Americans are atheist/Agnostic, according to the Pew Research Center, while 22.8% of Americans have no religious affiliation at all. We’re not an electorate you can completely ignore if you need to reach out beyond your base.

The person who asked the question was Amanda Knief, who also asked President Obama in 2011 why he hadn’t rescinded the Executive Order allowing organizations that receive taxpayer money to discriminate against employees on the basis of their religion (or lack thereof).
