A Christian Chaplain is Mad That He Can’t Tell LGBT Juvenile Inmates They’re Hellbound Sinners

You may want to break out the tissues.

A volunteer Christian chaplain has been “fired” by the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice because he refused to stop telling LGBT inmates that they were deviant hellbound sinners (the Bible’s words, of course, since he would never say such an awful thing on his own).

Todd Starnes, the faux-journalist who I’m sure conjures up Christian Persecution stories in his dreams, is appalled that the DJJ wants its counselors to be decent human beings:

It wasn’t so much a choice as it was a demand.

Chaplain David Wells was told he could either sign a state-mandated document promising to never tell inmates that homosexuality is “sinful” or else the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice would revoke his credentials.

“We could not sign that paper,” Chaplain Wells told me in a telephone call from his home in Kentucky. “It broke my heart.”

Folks, I warned you this would happen. The Christian purge has begun — and it’s only a matter of time before all of us will be forced to make the same decision Chaplain Wells had to make.

It’s not a Christian purge. It’s a bigot purge. There are plenty of kind Christian pastors who have no problem talking to LGBT inmates without telling them they have to “fix” their sexuality or spend an eternity in God’s Oven.

The Christian legal group Liberty Counsel is representing Wells and says he would never say anything “derogatory” toward LGBT kids. But if God says it and Wells quotes it, all must be forgiven:

… at no time in more than 12 years of ministry has Mr. Wells or any of the other volunteer ministers who assist him ever used “derogatory language” in a manner that “conveys bias towards or hatred of” children with various issues involving sexuality. He has never (nor would he ever) call a child names, such as “abnormal,” or “deviant,” or “sinful.” At all times, Mr. Wells has conveyed the truth of God’s Word, and provided spiritual counseling in all kinds of situations — including discussions of sin and forgiveness — in a manner that is sensitive to the needs and feelings of the children.

The DJJ is making the right move by getting rid of the bigots. The last thing these inmates need is another person telling them how horrible they are for something they have no control over. Sexuality isn’t a sin. Acting on your sexuality (in a consensual way) is something to cherish, not fear. And if a Christian pastor can’t abide by the government’s rules, they shouldn’t be working (or volunteering) in a government setting.
