Ben Carson Blames Jews and Low Gun Ownership for the Holocaust

Dr. Ben Carson is at it again. In an attempt to beat out Gov. Bobby Jindal for worst person of the week, Carson is upping the ante on the victim-blaming he directed at victims of the Oregon college shooting. Who’s to blame for their own demise this time?

The Jews, of course.

The Jerusalem Post reports:

In a CNN interview Thursday, Republican presidential hopeful Dr. Ben Carson said that the tragedy of the Holocaust could have been avoided, or its magnitude greatly minimized, had the Jews of Europe been armed.

“I think the likelihood of Hitler being able to accomplish his goals would have been greatly diminished if the people had been armed,” Carson said.  “I’m telling you there is a reason these dictatorial people take the guns first.”

The Republican said that the process of removing accessibility to guns allowed the Nazis to “carry out their evil intentions with relatively little resistance.”

Yes, Dr. Carson. The Holocaust happened because people didn’t have enough guns. It had nothing to do with the economic decimation inflicted by Western powers after WWI. It wasn’t tied to the systematic persecution and isolation of a minority group. It was not at all related to the apathy of surrounding nations as the Holocaust started to kick into high gear. Those armed ghetto residents in Poland and France and their unsuccessful attempts to fight back against the German army were totally an anomaly. A few well-armed Jews could absolutely have accomplished what took the allies six years to shut down. This was totally their fault for not stockpiling guns and ammunition in paranoid fashion.

Classy.

Carson’s argument is asinine and offensive, but he’s not the first to make it. The NRA, Fox News, Alex Jones, and a slew of others love to fall back on the Hitler line when the subject of gun control comes up. As a result, it’s an argument that’s already been thoroughly debunked.

But you do you, Carson. Goodness knows you could use a bump in the polls, and maybe your attention-mongering will deliver it from a base that doesn’t care much about reality.
