After Arkansas County Takes Down Nativity Scene Outside Courthouse, Ignorant Christians Protest

Last month, I posted about the Nativity scene that had been in front of the Baxter County Courthouse in Mountain Home, Arkansas in 2013:

That Christian display was essentially an homage to Christianity, making it unconstitutional as far as the government was concerned. That point was made even more clear after blogger JT Eberhard‘s father requested to place a “Happy Winter Solstice” banner in the same space only to have it rejected.

It took a lawsuit for a judge to finally say what we knew all along: Either county leaders had to allow all religious/non-religious displays or they couldn’t put up any of them.

Right now, it appears that they would rather have nothing at all. Maybe it’s a way to stir up local Christians against atheists fighting for the same opportunities. Either way, it’s working.

There was a protest on Sunday by Christians who were furious that the Nativity scene was removed from the courthouse grounds.

The reporter even pointed out to some of them that the Nativity scene could go back up as long as other displays were also allowed, but that didn’t satisfy them. (Because only Christians deserve special rights, don’tcha know.)

JT Eberhard does a really nice job of responding to the various comments in that article — and explaining why the protesters there just don’t get it. You should read his rebuttal here.
