Alabama Legislator: Don’t Buy Goods from Non-Christian Store Owners Because It’ll Fund Terrorism

Alabama State Rep. Alan Harper made a sensible plea to his constituents on Monday, telling them to buy “American” when they go shopping or get gas this holiday season. He wouldn’t be the only politician saying something like that, but he may be the only one who followed it up with a helpful hint for where people shouldn’t spend their money:

The [convenience] stores/tobacco outlets, etc. with the lights around the windows and doors are not owned by God fearing Christians. In large part, these stores are owned by folk that send their profits back to their homeland and then in turn use these funds against our country to create turmoil, fear and in some cases death and destruction.

He then added: “I realize I am ‘painting with a broad brush’ here, but the madness has to stop.”

Maybe the madness would stop if Harper didn’t click “Publish” every time he had an idiotic brain fart…

Look: I’m Indian. I know plenty of brown people who aren’t Christian and who own convenience stores. (It’s a stereotype, but whatever. It’s true.) They are every bit as American as Harper — with the added benefit of not being racist assholes.

Besides the fact that non-Christian business owners aren’t even indirectly supporting terrorism, what the hell is Harper suggesting by saying we shouldn’t buy things from non-Christians? Are we allowed to buy things from white atheist business owners? What about Jews? What about Christians who think God is their friend? Are white Muslims okay?

It didn’t get any better when his own commenters called him out on his racism:

This is all just some big joke to him. He’ll stoke the flames of nationalism, stirring up divisions with people who look different or read a different holy book from him, then look the other way when anyone suggests he’s the problem instead of them. What else would you expect from the party whose presidential frontrunner is Donald Trump?
