Merry Christmas! American Christianity is on the Decline as “Nones” Steadily Grow

A new Gallup poll released today shows that, while Christians are still in the majority, their numbers are continuing to fall as more of them drift over to the Nones:

The downtick in the percentage of the U.S. population identifying as Christian over the past eight years is a continuation of a trend that has been evident for decades. In Gallup surveys in the 1950s, over 90% of the adult population identified as Christian, with only a small percentage claiming no religious identification at all or identifying with a non-Christian religion.

The same report also points out that younger people are less religious, with nearly a third of people under the age of 30 having no religious affiliation.

I think my favorite part of the chart, though, is the asterisk that says “Through Dec. 20, 2015.” I’d like to think that means the Christian numbers could go down even more in the final week of the year.
