Donald Trump Wins “Islamophobe of the Year” Award… but Don’t Get Too Excited

The man keeps winning!

The Islamic Human Rights Commission, a UK-based Muslim civil rights group, declared Donald Trump the overall winner of its “Islamophobe of the Year” award, a distinction given by voters to people who “outrageously displayed their prejudice for all to see over the past year.”

Before you get too excited, though, this award isn’t really all that meaningful, even in a satirical sense. This year, Maajid Nawaz, a self-described “non-devout Muslim” and critic of the faith who fights against Islamic extremism, was also nominated.

If the IHRC deems criticism of religion as bigotry, then its no better than conservative Christian groups like the American Family Association which created a “Bigotry Map” that included atheist groups. Not atheist groups that physically attacked Christians or pushed policies that hurt them, mind you. Just atheist groups where the members didn’t believe in God.

And to add insult to injury, don’t forget that the IHRC gave last year’s “Islamophobe of the Year” award to the publication Charlie Hebdo just weeks after most of its staff had been slaughtered by Islamic extremists.

I repeat: Last year, they said the Charlie Hebdo staffers did more damage to the Muslim faith than the devout Muslims who assassinated them.

Because mocking religion is apparently way worse than killing people in the name of that religion.

But Donald Trump? At least he deserves an award for being a bigot. He has talked about banning Muslims from entering the country, called for Muslims to “register” in a national database, and praised a fictional general who killed Muslim prisoners.

Let’s hope it marks the beginning of the end of his winning streak.
