We’ve talked about Pastor Kevin Swanson more times than I’d like to admit on this site. He’s the guy who refused to buy Girl Scout cookies because he didn’t want to “support lesbianism.” He also once said children or their parents (it wasn’t clear which) should be drowned rather than letting kids read the Harry Potter series.
But if you heard of him in the news, it’s likely because he once said homosexuality is a sin “worthy of death” — and that didn’t stop Republican candidates Mike Huckabee, Ted Cruz, and Bobby Jindal from attending one of his conferences. (Cruz quietly apologized for appearing there a month later.)
So what’s Swanson up to now?
He’s calling for more killing in the name of Jesus. And once again, he’s picking on the Girl Scouts. This time, he’s saying troop leaders deserve to die because they’re (somehow) still “promoting lesbianism.”
When you [parents] make the wrong choices… and you set them [kids] before… organizations that promote homosexuality, when you offend one of these “little ones that believes in me,” it would be better for you that a millstone be hanged around your neck and you be drowned at the bottom of the sea. Those are serious words…
His co-host added, with Swanson’s approval, that kids shouldn’t be “trained” by people spreading bad messages — which led Swanson to follow up with even more criticism of Girl Scout leaders.
This is a perfect example of Christians getting away with saying things in biblical code. In straight-forward English, Swanson is saying Girl Scout leaders deserve to be executed. In Christian-speak, Swanson is just exercising his religious freedom and condemning homosexuality. When you run the translation, though, it’s hardly a message anyone would expect from a “good book.”
The question is why any decent Christian would think any of this is acceptable.
