Who Needs Drivers Ed? Irish Priests Will Bless the Roads to Improve Safety

In one Irish county, Easter Sunday’s sermons are going to coincide with an unorthodox effort to improve road safety. After over a dozen roadway deaths last year, county priests are going to bless the area’s roads.

That’s supposed to improve matters, much to the surprise of, you know, facts. Who knew accidents only occurred on unblessed roads? Dare I ask what the priests bless to help people avoid sexually transmitted diseases?

It’s not just churches with this focus. The Mayo County Council plans to pitch in as well, making the church activities part of their “broader initiative on road safety.”

Mayo County Council, who participated in the campaign last year as well, have said they hope the Blessing of the Roads campaign:

  • Creates greater awareness of safety among road users,
  • Gives people a chance to remember family or friends who may have died in road crashes
  • Recognises the efforts of those who are working in all areas to reduce road trauma.

Provided that the good advice isn’t overshadowed by the placebo, involving the churches and community organizations in an effort to combat drunk driving and promote vehicular safety isn’t necessarily a bad idea: the more voices preaching safety, the better.

I’m just not sure pretending that there are spoken phrases that can magically improve matters, rather than relying entirely on the actions of drivers, is the best way to do it. That’s more like a distraction from the real problem than anything else.
