Porn Website Shuts Out North Carolina to Protest Anti-LGBT Law

In solidarity with the LGBT community of North Carolina, a popular porn website is delivering a jab to the conservative community where it hurts them the most — by cutting off their access.

Following in the steps Bruce Springsteen and Bryan Adams, who have both cancelled tour dates in states that have recently restricted LGBT equality, xHamster.com will deny sexy eye candy to anyone with a North Carolina IP address until the recently passed HB 2 has been repealed. The offending bill is in place to prevent individual counties and cities from making laws that would protect the rights of LGBT people.

For a state whose representatives have proudly affirmed their transphobia, North Carolina sure consumes a lot of “transsexual” porn. According to xHamster, the state pulled in 400,000 searches for “transsexual” and 319,900 for “gay” — and that was just in the month of March. But as of noon on Monday, the only eyefuls residents are getting are their lonely reflections staring back at them through a black screen.

xHamster.com spokesman Mike Kulich — yep, even porn sites have spokespeople — sent a comment to the Huffington Post regarding their decision:

“We have spent the last 50 years fighting for equality for everyone and these laws are discriminatory which XHamster.com does not tolerate. Judging by the stats of what you North Carolinians watch, we feel this punishment is a severe one. We will not standby and pump revenue into a system that promotes this type of garbage. We respect all sexualities and embrace them.

Leave it to the people running a porn site to display a greater sense of human decency than North Carolina legislators.

Kulich says the black screen will soon be replaced with a petition calling for the repeal of HB 2, “Hopefully, it will get as many signatures as the ‘transsexual’ searches.”

To be sure, it’s not like the people in North Carolina have no access to porn at all. From what I hear, there are several other websites with obscene content. But as the saying goes (I assume), as xHamster goes, so does the rest of the internet.
