House Republican Uses Bible to Condemn Colleagues Supporting a Pro-LGBT Amendment to Spending Bill

It’s no surprise that House Republicans can’t seem to get anything done, but it looks like they’ll pull together if it means discriminating against LGBT people.

Last week, during debate on a military construction bill, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY) added a provision stipulating that

nothing in the underlying spending bills can undermine President Obama’s executive order barring discrimination by government contractors based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

That ought to be a non-controversial issue, but the GOP bigots held the vote open long enough for enough members of their party to switch their votes against the bill.

Maloney then added the same provision to an energy spending bill this week… but on Thursday, that was also torpedoed.

But not before Rep. Rick Allen opened the day by reading Bible verses. One of them, Romans 1:18-32, says that gay people deserve death. The other, Revelation 22:18-19, says that those who disobey God will “lose their share in the book of life.”

Even many Republicans were disturbed by the Bible thumping:

Several Republicans walked out of the room in disgust.

“It was f—ing ridiculous,” said one GOP lawmaker, who was in the room and supported the LGBT provision.

A GOP leadership aide offered a similar verdict.

“A lot of members were clearly uncomfortable and upset,” the aide said.

As disturbed as they might have been, though, the Republican bill with the pro-LGBT amendment still didn’t pass.

An official with the Human Rights Campaign called on Republican leaders to condemn Allen for his “vile and dangerous remarks”… don’t hold your breath.
