Annie Mae Braiden didn’t do anything wrong. She gave birth to her daughter Isabelle about 10 weeks ago and everything should have been normal. Unfortunately, Isabelle has spent the past month in the pediatric intensive care unit in a Victoria (British Columbia) hospital because she picked up whooping cough.
I repeat: She picked up a disease that vaccinations should have prevented, but because other children didn’t have their shots, Isabelle is the one who’s suffering.
On Facebook, Braiden urged other parents to make sure their kids get vaccinated — not just for them, but for the kids who may be affected by someone else’s negligence.
… What you do with your kids is your choice but do not tell me that not vaccinating your kids isn’t hurting anyone but your own kids, Isabelle is proof that it harms the other little babes who aren’t old enough to get their vaccines yet. My son is vaccinated to protect himself and the other kids he’s around. It never crossed my mind to not vaccinate, I want to protect my children and other children. Please vaccinate your kids, it’s not fair that my little girl is in the PICU coughing and not being able to breath from a disease that shouldn’t be around in this day an age
An article about the family also quoted the doctor treating Isabelle, who said these sorts of incidents are happening with increasing frequency:
Dr. Jeff Bishop… said whooping cough is incredibly infectious and spreads easily through contact with anyone who is inadequately vaccinated.
He said that anecdotally, he has noticed over the past year the hospital has treated more children with whooping cough than usual. A small number of children have died during the past five years, he added.
Scary stuff. And entirely preventable, if not for the ignorance and gullibility of a lot of parents.
