Christian Preacher Wants to Raise $455,000 Online… For What, I Don’t Know

Remember John Oliver‘s great segment last year about televangelists scamming people out of money? It helped expose something that’s been going on for years, but it was also kind of quaint. The people who are most likely to be gullible enough to give money to a late night televangelist, I suspect, are the elderly.

If you’re a Christian aiming for a younger crowd to fleece, what do you do? If you’re Joshua Feuerstein, you tell people you want to buy a $20,000 camera, raise a lot of money to that end, then continue making awful vertical videos with your iPhone

And if you’re Marcus Rogers, a person who posts biblical gibberish on Facebook and similarly-horrible vertical videos on YouTube, you tell people you want to spread the Gospel throughout the world. You make lofty promises without offering any specifics as to how you’re going to accomplish these things.

In other words, Marcus is the Donald Trump of Christianity.

Here’s his GoFundMe pitch for why he needs $455,000.

I just want to reach this world with the love and truth of Jesus Christ. I feel like if I am not doing that to my full potential I might as well be dead. I know the vision that I had, and God told me to prepare the way for His return with Holy Ghost Fire. It is time for me to expand beyond Facebook and Youtube. God told me the other day that darkness would hit this earth, but the fire of revival would burn through the night. I want to go around this world and encourage, motivate, inspire, heal in Jesus name and do whatever I can for the Kingdom of God. I am not ashamed of Jesus. I am not scared to stand for truth. I am willing to go from church to church. I am willing to hit the streets. I am willing to do tent revivals. All I know is that when two or three or gathered in His name Jesus will be in the midst. I have big dreams, but I can not do it on my own. I humbly ask for help and prayers. I promise you whatever seed you plant will go into spreading this gospel to the world. I want this more than I want to breath. I am going to give God everything I have. I am ready to live and die for this truth. If you will help me, I will go out and rock this world for Jesus. I will set this world on fire through the power of Jesus Christ. I will be bold. I will be loud. I will be unashamed even if it cost me my life, my image, or anything else. I want God to look down at me and smile. I want Him to know that I gave everything I got for His glory. I did everything I could to reach as many souls as I could before my time is up. I promise I won’t sell out by the grace of God. I want to inject this world with the truth of God with everything I have until the day Jesus calls me home. I love Jesus. I love His people. I love souls…..Souls are the heartbeat of God. I just want to be the hands, the feet, and a mouthpiece for God to speak through in these last days. If you choose to bless this ministry, I pray that God blessed you right back ten times over as a sign to you that you made a investment in His work that He has ordained and blessed. I love you all. Be encouraged in Jesus name.

There’s a video, too:

It’s the same pitch that televangelists make: Give me money, you’ll be rewarded ten times as much for your generosity, and I’m not going to tell you anything more.

Did you learn a damn thing about where that $455,000 would go? Nope. Did you learn how he’s going to “heal” people? Of course not. Did he explain his background in creating churches and using money in a responsible way? Not a chance.

What’s really disturbing is that he’s raised more than $15,000 in two days.

I have no problem with people raising money online for their projects. It’s great that websites like GoFundMe have made supporting them so simple. But I’m always leery when people want exorbitant amounts of money for certain projects when they can’t detail how that money would be spent.

After this GoFundMe ends, do you think this guy’s followers will keep track of what happens with the money? Will anyone? I doubt it. He’ll take whatever he earns, keep doing the same thing as before, and before long, he’ll be asking for even more.
