This is a Strange Selection for Christian Worship Music

You’d expect to hear songs about Jesus before a Christian worship service. Maybe some cheesy pop song about love or grace.

But who the hell at Ohio’s Cedar Creek Church approved a cover of Bruno Mars‘ “Billionaire”?

You’d think someone there would’ve voiced concern with a song that glamorizes the pursuit of money… especially since Jesus said something about that.

Chris Rice at the Museum of Idolatry points out the problem from a Christian perspective:

The job of a shepherd is to direct the heart toward the love of God, not the love of money. This song (and the video) does more to tickle and provoke the love of money, than to stir the heart toward the love of God.

This song was a warm up to the sermon series called “The Vanishing Act” where the pastor starts by asking, “Is there a way to enjoy money the way God intended? That’s what this series is all about.” Weird…

At least the people in this church are honest about what matters most to them.
