Trying to Make Sense of the Fahrenheit Temperature Scale

Where did the Fahrenheit scale come from? And why do relevant temperatures (like the freezing point for water) seem so arbitrary?

Turns out the numbers really don’t make much sense at all. All the more reason to adopt the Celsius scale (like pretty much every other country in the world).
