Catholic League: Acknowledging the Marriage of Two Gay Men is “Fake News”

Lonnie Billard, a substitute teacher at Charlotte Catholic High School in North Carolina, got fired after he posted on Facebook in 2014 that he was going to get married to his male partner. While the school may have the right to fire gay married teachers (who don’t adhere to anti-gay Catholic doctrine), Billard argued that those rules didn’t apply to him as a substitute. That’s why he filed a lawsuit against the school and Diocese earlier this month with the help of the ACLU, saying the Catholic school system violated his civil rights.

There’s another discussion to be had about whether the lawsuit has merit. But let me draw your attention to the Catholic League’s Bill Donohue, who can’t even acknowledge the facts of the case without being a bigot. He refuses to admit Billard is now married to his partner.

Here’s a portion of the press release:

“I know that the Catholic Church opposes same-sex marriage,” says Billard, “but I don’t think my commitment to my husband [sic] has any bearing on my work in the classroom.” [Note: husbands are men and wives are women, so if Billard’s partner is his husband, that would make him his wife, and no one really believes that to be true. The Catholic League does not tolerate fake news.]

It’s as if Donohue has an asshole quota he has to reach with every statement… It’s not enough for him to just say Catholicism opposes gay marriage. He has to demonize people who are gay.

Acknowledging someone else’s civil rights isn’t “fake news.” Believing you’re chowing down on the body of Jesus, on the other hand…
