Texas Lawmaker’s Bill Criminalizes Abortion So Women Become More “Personally Responsible” About Sex

A male Republican legislator from Texas who’s not a doctor — obviously the ideal person to make decisions about women’s health — has proposed a bill that would “ban and criminalize abortions.” Unlike past attempts to restrict abortion, State Rep. Tony Tinderholt isn’t even bothering to push unnecessary rules on abortion providers under the guise of keeping women safe.

Tinderholt

He’s straight-up treating women as murderers if they have an abortion. And since there’s no exception in the bill for rape victims, if passed, it could lead to felony charges against rape victims.

It got even worse yesterday when Tinderholt defended the bill by saying denying women access to abortion would help them become “more personally responsible” with sex.

State Representative Tony Tinderholt, of Arlington, said in an interview with the Observer that, if passed, the bill would reduce the number of pregnancies “when they know that there’s repercussions.”

“Right now, it’s real easy. Right now, they don’t make it important to be personally responsible because they know that they have a backup of ‘oh, I can just go get an abortion.’ Now, we both know that consenting adults don’t always think smartly sometimes. But consenting adults need to also consider the repercussions of the sexual relationship that they’re gonna have, which is a child,” Tinderholt said.

Republicans: They want the government out of your lives but inside your pants.

It’s a ridiculous argument, too, suggesting that only women deserve to be punished for having sex — there are no repercussions for men if this bill is passed. Tinderholt also ignores the reality that a lot of married women have abortions for a variety of reasons. And he’s oblivious to the fact that you can’t prevent abortions; you can only prevent safe abortions. His bill would inevitably hurt women in his state… not that he gives a damn. Unborn fetuses matter more to him than living women.

Since Republicans who push this kind of legislation are inevitably hypocrites, you’re probably wondering what the deal is with Tinderholt, a pious Roman Catholic.

Well, he’s currently working on his fifth marriage (to a fourth woman), a fact that seemed particularly relevant in 2015 when he spoke out against marriage equality.

He obviously doesn’t give a damn about divorce — or adultery, by certain Christian definitions.

Sins only count when he can blame women.
