West Virginia Legislators Introduce a Bill to Make the Holy Bible the Official State Book

West Virginia legislators, who clearly have no other problems to worry about, have filed a bill, House Bill 2568, that would make the Holy Bible the official state book.

The bill is currently in the House Judiciary Committee, where it will sit in a room full of weeping constitutions. Make no mistake: This is an attempt to elevate Christianity above all other religions (and atheism) without explicitly saying the Bible is true. That doesn’t mean West Virginia couldn’t be subject to a lawsuit if this bill is passed.

Even Tennessee’s governor vetoed a similar bill last year, saying at the time that “this bill trivializes the Bible.” When Tennessee says the Bible bill is going to far, maybe West Virginia should take the hint.

As it stands, no state currently designates the Bible as the official state book (though Alabama has an official “State Bible”).
