We’re at the point where a scandal involving Republicans and hypocrisy barely qualifies as news, but here you go: Oklahoma State Sen. Ralph Shortey, a man who managed Donald Trump‘s campaign in the state during the GOP primaries and who voted in favor of an anti-transgender bathroom bill, was caught in a hotel room with a young boy.
Details about electronic communications between Shortey and the teenager were captured on the teenager’s Kindle tablet that was taken into evidence, police said.
The conversation started with the boy asking Shortey, “Is there anything I can help you do some cash?”
Shortey, using the screen name “Jamie Tilley,” responded: “How much you needing?”
“I need money for spring break,” the boy answered.
“Tilley” responded, “I don’t really have any legitimate things I need help right now. Would you be interested in ‘sexual’ stuff?“
Shortey is married with two kids. But don’t worry. I’m sure he’ll give a speech mentioning Jesus in the near future and everyone will forgive him.
In the meantime, he’s received the worst of punishments from his colleagues in the State Senate.
… the Oklahoma Senate imposed sanctions Wednesday on Shortey, voting 43-0 for a resolution that accuses him of “disorderly behavior.” Among other things, it removes Shortey from membership and leadership of various Senate committees, bars him from occupying his office and reserved parking spot at the Capitol, blocks his expense allowances and authorship of bills, and revokes his right to have an executive assistant.
Senate officials said Shortey will still receive his $38,400 annual salary as a senator and will be allowed to vote.
Wouldn’t want him to stop voting against LGBT rights now, would we? That might get in the way of spreading family values.
