Religious Father of Slain Indian Atheist Says He Will Join His Son’s Group in Solidarity

More than a week after the brutal slaughter of Indian atheist activist H. Farook (below), his father is doing something incredibly courageous: Vowing to pick up where his son left off.

Speaking to The Indian Express, 54-year-old R Hameed said, “If the police version is true, that he was murdered by a radical Muslim group, then they killed my son using wrong interpretations of the Quran. The Quran is one holy book that insists on and allows the right of dissent since the time of the Prophet. If they killed him for being an atheist, I have decided to join his organisation and do what he did.

That’s an incredibly brave thing to say. Not just because Hameed appears to be a Muslim himself, but because he’s essentially saying, very publicly, that if they killed his son for being an atheist, they’ll have to go through him, too, to stop Farook’s ideas from spreading.

Hameed added that, while he wasn’t thrilled with his son’s “assertiveness,” he and his wife usually let it slide because he never tried imposing it on anyone. He put his thoughts out there and people could come to their own senses… unlike his assailants, who felt violence was the way to spread the Religion of Peace.
