Alabama Supreme Court Upholds Suspension for Radical Christian Judge Roy Moore

Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore can’t catch a break. (Hallelujah.) Yesterday, a “Special Court” composed of retired judges — since the current ones all recused themselves from weighing in on this matter — said that a ban from the bench could remain in place. All because Moore doesn’t give a damn about the law he’s supposed to uphold.

If you need a reminder, Moore had been suspended without pay for the remainder of his term for defying the law (again) after telling probate judges in the state they didn’t have to issue same-sex marriage licenses — despite the Supreme Court ruling saying those marriages were legal under the law and government officials couldn’t get in the way of that.

While he had no power, he still had a job for technical reasons. But yesterday’s ruling puts an end to that.

Right-wing legal group Liberty Counsel is furious that Moore won’t be able to impose his religious will on the masses:

“This opinion and the entire case against Chief Justice Moore is a tragedy. For the first time in the history of Alabama, a justice has been disciplined for issuing an Administrative Order. Under this system, no judge is safe to issue orders or render dissents. The system has to change, and politics should be removed from judicial decision making and disciplinary actions,” said Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel, which represents Chief Justice Moore.

Someone call the waaaaambulance.

This is not, as Liberty puts it, a “politically-motivated punishment.” This is a punishment for a man who has one job to do and has shown repeatedly he’s unable to do it. Any judge who takes the Bible more seriously than the Constitution when it comes to deciding legal issues doesn’t deserve to be in power.

Replace the word “Bible” in that last sentence with “Qur’an” and Christians would be screaming about how Sharia Law is taking over this country. But when a Christian judge does it, everything’s suddenly okay. (There’s a reason Moore was called the “Ayatollah of Alabama.”)

The truth is: If a judge treated Christians the way Roy Moore has treated LGBT people, Liberty Counsel would want that person fired in a heartbeat. The hypocrisy is truly stunning coming from people who constantly sound the alarms about judges whom they think legislate from the bench. That’s all Moore was ever doing, whether it was ignoring the marriage equality ruling or installing a Ten Commandments monument in the state courthouse in the dead of night and refusing to remove it.

Even if he’s not on the bench, though, he may still have a future in politics. There are rumors that he’ll run for a Senate seat or even the governorship.

As if Alabama hasn’t seen enough scandal already.
