Another MI Doctor Arrested, Along With His Wife, for Assisting With Female Genital Mutilation

Just a week after a Detroit physician, Jumana Nagarwala, was charged with mutilating the genitals of two 7-year-old girls, her accomplices have also been arrested.

On Friday, police took into custody another doctor and his wife, charging them with helping Nagarwala cut up the genitalia of little girls by letting her use their clinic for that very purpose.

According to a criminal complaint unsealed Friday, while a doctor removed parts of the girls’ genitals, the wife of the clinic owner held the girls’ hands “in order to comfort them.”

Two months later, Dr. Fakhruddin Attar, 53, and his wife, Farida Attar, 50, both of Livonia, were arrested Friday morning at the Burhani Medical Clinic, where the alleged cuttings took place.

Attar says he allowed Nagarwala to use his clinic after hours, but that genital mutilation was never on the menu. If it happened, in other words, he’d be shocked.

The surveillance footage from February 3 says otherwise:

At 6:09 p.m., Nagarwala arrived at the clinic.

Four minutes later, [Dr. Fakhruddin] Attar handed her a white bag in the parking lot. The two went inside the clinic.

At 6:22 p.m., Attar’s wife arrives and enters the clinic.

At 6:25 p.m., a mother and 7-year-old girl enter the clinic. They leave almost 20 minutes later. Then, a second mom and her daughter enter. They leave about 20 minutes later.

At 7:03 p.m., Nagarwala left the clinic.

Leaders in the Dawoodi Bohra community (that everyone in this story belongs to) have said they will comply with law enforcement officials.

As I’ve said before, there’s no good reason, cultural or otherwise, to slice a girl’s genitals. (And, yes, the same can also be said of boys.)

Much like the “faith healing” deaths we see coming out of fringe Christian groups, the only way to stop this awful practice may be to put the culprits behind bars and make an example of them. There can be no religious or cultural exemption for this. Those parents had no right to physically harm their girls like that, the doctors never should have complied, and the children have to live with this injustice for the rest of their lives.
