Roy Moore, the Christian Judge Twice Removed from Alabama’s Supreme Court, Will Run for Senate

Roy Moore, the judicial activist who routinely acts like the Bible matters more than the Constitution when it comes to legal issues, announced today that he would run for the U.S. Senate.

He wants the seat that once belonged to Jeff Sessions, now the Attorney General, and is temporarily being held by Luther Strange. The primaries for this off-cycle seat take place on August 15 with the general election happening on December 12.

“I’ll stand for the rights and liberties of the people,” Moore said to reporters gathered at the State Capitol.

“My position has always been God first, family then country. I share the vision of President Donald Trump to make America great again,” Moore said. “We can make America great again, we’ve got to make America good again.”

As for which rights and liberties he will stand for, we have no idea. With him, the answer usually depends on which religion you are.

Moore, as you might recall, was recently suspended for the second time from the state’s Supreme Court, where he served as Chief Justice, after he told probate judges they didn’t have to issue same-sex marriage licenses. The Supreme Court has already ruled that those licenses are legal and that government officials can’t get in the way of that. He also made headlines more than a decade ago when he installed a Ten Commandments monument in the state courthouse in the dead of night and refused to remove it.

You would think a man who holds such contempt for the Constitution wouldn’t have a chance in a Senate election, but this is Alabama. Moore has a lot of name recognition in the state. That makes him a tough candidate to beat.

I didn’t think it was possible for Sessions to be replaced by someone whose views are even more despicable than his, but leave it to Alabama to find a way.

Right Wing Watch has more on Moore’s despicable history.
