Indian Judge: Peacocks Don’t Have Sex. They Reproduce By Swallowing Tears. Actual Tears.

A judge from India is being rightfully mocked online after he claimed that peacocks don’t reproduce through sex. Instead, he alleged that (female) peahens get pregnant by “swallowing the tears” of (male) peacocks.

“A peacock is a lifelong celibate” said Justice Mahesh Chandra Sharma of the Rajasthan High Court in western India on Wednesday.

On his last day as a judge in the state capital, Jaipur, Mr Sharma went on to claim that the peahen gets pregnant after swallowing the peacock’s tears and a peacock or peahen is then born.

Mr Sharma made these remarks immediately after delivering a judgment in which he recommended that the cow, considered holy by India’s majority Hindu community, be declared India’s national animal. The peacock is already the country’s national bird.

He added that cow urine prevented aging. Because when it’s your last day on the job, why the hell not? (He’s not retiring, by the way. One report said Sharma is going from the Rajasthan High Court to India’s Supreme Court in New Delhi, while others suggested he’d be pursuing a political career.)

There are many Hindus who believe this urban legend, but you’d think someone whose job is to weigh the evidence in front of him would know better than to perpetuate mythology.

At least people online are having fun with it. Because the alternative is to be horrified.

“The peahen gets pregnant drinking the tears of the peacock. That makes me weep,” tweeted Ruth Saldanha. “I hope I don’t get pregnant.”

Don’t make the mistake of stereotyping all Indians because of this. Plenty of Americans believe plenty of nonsense, whether it’s Creationism, whatever Gwyneth Paltrow is hawking, or that burying a St. Joseph statue in your backyard will help you sell your home.

But when a judge regurgitates obvious bullshit, you know there’s something messed up with the legal system.

On a brighter note, his comments have led a lot of Indians to post videos of peacocks and peahens having sex. Because someone needs to educate the masses.
