Rick Santorum: The Sun Isn’t a Reliable Source of Renewable Energy

Rick Santorum, another Republican who never seems to run out of bad ideas, said on CNN this morning that solar and wind energy aren’t reliable.

As if the Sun is going to run out of… itself.

“We have a fracking revolution,” Santorum replied. “And it’s driving down the cost of our electricity.”

“Solar and wind are cheaper than coal,” [former Michigan Gov. Jennifer] Granholm pointed out. “Right now, China is cancelling 107 of its coal plants because why? Solar and wind are cheaper than coal. Same in India.”

“It’s not reliable, it’s not consistent,” Santorum opined.

“Oh my god!” Granholm gasped.

If Santorum was talking about Donald Trump, he’d be right. But he wasn’t and he isn’t. His argument is no more sensible that those who say we can’t rely on the Sun because it disappears at night.

Clean energy isn’t just a euphemism. It’s better for all of us and it’s the future of energy. We can embrace that and be leaders — or we can follow Trump and his Republican sycophants over the cliff into all those coal mines they admire so damn much.

We have a finite supply of fossil fuels. We’re not going to run out of the Sun or wind. Not for billions of years, anyway. It’s just a matter of finding the best ways of harnessing all that energy.
