It’s bad enough that Donald Trump doesn’t know or care enough about world affairs, yet has no problem tweeting out provocations for a nuclear war.
It’s so much scarier, though, when the right-wing pastors who represent Trump’s base and continue supporting the President Who Can Do No Wrong say that God wants us to go to nuclear war. That’s what Pastor Robert Jeffress said to the Christian Broadcasting Network‘s David Brody earlier tonight.
“When it comes to how we should deal with evil doers, the Bible, in the book of Romans, is very clear: God has endowed rulers full power to use whatever means necessary — including war — to stop evil. In the case of North Korea, God has given Trump authority to take out Kim Jong-Un. I’m heartened to see that our president — contrary to what we’ve seen with past administrations who have taken, at best, a sheepish stance toward dictators and oppressors — will not tolerate any threat against the American people. When President Trump draws a red line, he will not erase it, move it, or back away from it. Thank God for a President who is serious about protecting our country.”
We’ve long had the ability to take out hostile dictators in other countries. There’s a reason we haven’t just done it. The ramifications of getting rid of a dictator in one part of the world could be far worse than keeping that person in power; just look at what happened when George W. Bush went after Saddam Hussein. And it’s that long-term thinking that this administration completely lacks. While Trump may want to “take out Kim Jong-Un,” there’s no evidence that his team has thought through what would happen if we struck first or provoked the North Korean tyrant into launching a weapon. Trump has never thought to the future. He wants what he wants now and it doesn’t matter who gets hurt by his actions.
The last thing we need are people urging Trump to go after North Korea because they assure us God is protecting us with His good mojo.
Remember: The Christian Broadcasting Network has a great relationship with Trump. Pat Robertson just got a sit-down interview with him. Jeffress is a Southern Baptist pastor who represents perhaps the largest segment of Trump’s base. He previously said God (not Russia) intervened in our elections to elect Trump, and he somehow knew that Trump “had the most prayers of any inauguration in history.” Trump loves that sort of ass-kissing and has plenty of reason to keep them happy.
Some of the most radical Christians in the country are telling this President to take radical action. And if Trump’s past actions are any indication, he’ll listen to them before he ever listens to military leaders and experts.
This is what modern Christianity has become. Forget Jesus. Forget peace. Forget turning the other cheek. It’s about incompetence, brute force, rash thinking, and using God to justify the worst kinds of human behavior.
